Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I found a picture of a langshan comb for us to visualize!

Yep, Big and Ugly - - That is what my birds have. .. . Glad it is SOP!
But it looks like the blade is rounded with the points on the blade, like Wynettes. . . not big flat extension that mine have going on.

It looked all girly to me . . . . I didn't think there would be a doubt. .. . .
It that is a cockerel, it is seriously lacking in the wattle / comb department !

I think it is female as well. She might just suprise you and lay early. My blue and black copper girls that get red in the comb and face early on lay sooner than the others.

Yes, I do like the Davis birds for size - size does seem to be lacking in many Marans lines. However, this guy has NO Davis blood to my knowledge...I need to check on that, he's not from my line. I'll report back what his lineage is, but I believe he is MOSTLY W. Jeane.

Looks like a pullet to me, too, but I WILL say that in my last hatch, I had one that I thought was a pullet clear up to about 15 weeks! It STILL looked like more like a pullet when I sold it at 20 weeks, but it most definitely was a cockerel. It even had skinny legs, the coloring of a black copper female, smallish comb/wattles....and the boys in the hatch even began wing dancing for "her" - but, "she" crowed...and was gone! The thing on this bird, the tail is VERY long...

As for the kelp....I have no specific amounts of anything I use, I do not measure unless I absolutely have to. I sprinkle on or mix in probably 1/4 to a 1/3 cup or handful to a 5 gal bucket of feed and mix. I add kelp maybe 2 times a week.

Thanks for the info. That sounds about what I do. I know it's concentrated so didn't want to give too much. Try to get pics of chickels soon.

I looked at that too Wynette and the cockerel traits that I see are a CURVE in the tail... also such pink in the wattles... I wouldn't expect that much yet

I have to say also... I had a "rooster" that even had pointy feathers, thick legs, red comb and wattles and I was SURE it was a rooster... I was going to keep it... IT never crowed.. then it laid an egg... It was 6 or 7 months old... I thought it was a late bloomer....

Since the fish meal is sooooo high in protein and you are looking for protein levels much lower. ... .
It might be better if we start with a 50 lb bag of layer ration and add a small amount of fish meal to boost it up to the desired 20 or 25 % levels.

Add about 4.5 lbs of fish meal to a 50 lb bag of layer ration to get 20%
Add about 11.25 lbs of fish meal to a 50 lb bag of layer ration to get 25 %

Thank you so much! What is the formula for figuring that out?

I agree, but if I recall, the one I had that was a "hennyroo" for so long has a long, straight tail like this one.

K, just for clarification, that cockerel of mine is mostly W. Jean, with a smattering of Presley.
