Black Copper Marans discussion thread

It's hard to tell from the pic, but he has light feathering on his shanks. He's only 7 months old, so I'm hoping they will get a little heavier before show time. It's hard for me to judge the angle of the tail. To me 90 degrees would be straight up and down and then 45 degrees would be half of that, but as much as I've read and looked at pictures and diagrams, it's just taking me awhile.

For what it's worth-- my boys are very active and seem to wear off their shank feathers. The only reason I figured this out is because I have one of the boys on R&R; he started with the same poor feathering only now he is very bushy again. Just an observation.

I joined the marans chicken club and they have a yahoo group. On that group there are files, here is a link to drawings.

I am not sure if one can view it if not logged onto the yahoo group. Hope it works.

I don't know why but sometimes for me to see it simplified into a drawing helps me understand the shape I am looking for.

Christie Rhae, I'm a member of that group, but just neglected to check there. Thank you!! (I always think of BYC first

My roo's tail is about 6 inches longer than that.... It's about 13 inches long or longer.....
I went to the French Marans website and quote from their description of the tail:

"Good Marans (cocks and hens) should always have a short tail, tilted 45° compared to a horizontal line, but is still acceptable until 60° maximum. It is the 45° slope which is required in the standard.
Beyond 60°, the tail then appears much
too vertical and the back is very often too short, and the bird then lacks the minimum mass necessary for a good Marans.
To describe good tails in the Marans it is advisable to join together two essential characteristics, which are-
main tail feathers well closed and shorter than average.
- sickles shorter than average. "
The Marans don't have long flowing sickle tail feathers. They are to be shorter than average. It shouldn't go much past, if at all, the other tail feathers.
I point that out because its not something we talk about much, and I am seeing more and more very long sickle feathers which aren't correct.
