Black Copper Marans discussion thread

A black sussex? Sure it isn't an Orp? Interesting!
I don't know what the consensus is, but I really like the chicks I had shipped from Hodge's. (www.hodgesfarms.net) or something like that. They're almost cheaper than some people's hatching eggs. Geez- if I can get chicks for $6, why would I drive 4 hours each way and pay somebody $7 each for eggs? Because I was totally niave, that's why! It seems like they are all from the same 3 lines or so anyway.

This was my supposed to be BCM. I was told he looked like a Sussex. OOps (edit) Speckled Sussex

This is my first rooster. He was 1 out of 4 that I bought as chicks last year. I have 4 cockerels that are his offspring but so far none of them look any better than him so I will probably use him again this season.

X2 Can I also get in this? I so want to learn more about breeding really good BCM's.

A big thanks for starting this particular thread!

This is my roo, Albert, at 6 mths. I specifically chose him when he was growing up because he did not have all the red.
I am all about dual purpose with this breed but beauty for myself to see. I did not care for the wheatens as much and that is why I chose black copper. I wanted less red on my Marans.

And this Agatha. I like the black body with the colored hackle feathers. I prefer mahogany but she has a lighter color. Her daughters come out much nicer.

I enjoy reading this thread but I suppose I will be a lurker since I don't show mine and never will.
But they are mighty good meat. There isn't a bird out there I think tastes better.

I went and snapped some quick pics of my three older birdies. These two pullets are about 5 months old if memory serves, both very dark and beetley, with almost no feathers on their legs, just little stubs

And then my poor sad tailless roo.

I hope it grows back soon, he looks so silly without it.

O.K., I won't just lurk and learn. Geebs says post a picture of one of your roos. Here is a fairly young shot of one of my roos, Jake.
