Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Mine tend to lay in cycles. They will lay really well for up to 3 months and really slow way down. Not a weather thing here I don't think. Just the way they are. I was getting 13 eggs a day now I am lucky to get 4-6 eggs a day. They eggs will be darker when they get started again. One reason I am afraid to do any culling right now... I will not know what color egg they TRULY Lay.

NOTHING can see in those Olive Eggs. I think you would have to sand paper that off to see what is going on in those eggs. I can't see through my Olive Eggs either. Blue Eggs are dense or something and then to add the Dark color of a Marans and

Sorry to cut you off on your conversation but I'd really like to hear what you good people have to say about these birds. I just got 14 FBCM chicks from this lady. This is a picture of her birds. Thank you so much in advance. :)

I'm super new at this but I can take at least a stab...

COLORING: The only good colored female I see is the one facing away between the two roosters. The rest are overmelanized (too dark). The boy on the left looks just OK, the boy on the right does not have even hackles- see how they start copper, fade to almost straw and then fade back to copper at the bottom? Not good. Often (but not always) means Wheaten blood somewhere in the line.

The do all have correct leg color and nice leg feathering, as far as body shape this is a REALLY bad picture to judge that from. You need a good side shot and if possible also a good top shot to really see it through pictures. Handling the birds in person is even better.

If you raise up ALL the chicks to maturity you might get 3 or 4 keepers if you're lucky. We are all in the same boat here with trying to improve the breed- but at least you know what your parent stock looks like and what to expect.

It looks like one of my BCM pullets will be heading to our future Easter/Olive Egger pen. She keeps laying a spotted egg where the egg is super dark on the spots and maybe a 3-4 on the rest of the egg. At least I have three more to replace her with soon. They all came from around a 7 egg. :D

I will comment on your BC. They all appear to have real good size.
The female seem to have a little of the pinch tail going on.
The wing carriage appears good on all.
Comb on the males looks good.
Hackle on the males look a little light but it could be from the Sun outside.
Chicks out of these should be better than most as far as starter flock.
How about some pictures of the chicks ?
The Dark females would not be a problem in the breeding program. You should get some female out of these with real good Hackle color.
