Black Copper Marans discussion thread

OK, I am mentally weeding out some boys, to be done for reals as soon as I have the time, hopefully over the next couple of weeks. I have what so far is a pretty nice looking boy, hatched early Dec, but at this time only has copper on his neck; none on his back, but so far a good size and seems to be fairly wide, dark legs, good feathering. I'm mostly trying this year to breed for size and shape (and egg color) with an eye towards correct coloring. I'm thinking this guy might be good to breed with a mossy girl I have, to get more color in the next generation. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I have a lot of boys to pick from and will keep several, but right now I'm getting ready to do in the really obvious culls, like the flaming orange fellas. I need to thin the pen out and thought I'd start with the real bad looking ones first. My daughter just had back surgery so I'm helping her out and driving about 100 miles a day, but as soon as I have some time I"ll be taking pics and asking for advice!

Hi All,

I am reading through this thread, and still have a lot of work to do to get through it but am learning more and more with each post. I am going to pick up some 8-week old BCM chicks tomorrow and was hoping to be able to pull a trio or 3 pullets and a roo when i go. At 8 weeks are these guys able to be sexed or is it still a 50/50 shot?

would love some info on what to look for at that age bird to attempt to get the best options i can! thanks in advance and look forward to being able to join in on the breeding discussions of these birds!

Hi, If they are eight weeks old just go by the comb size. The males should have a fairly large comb at eight weeks. Look for feather shanks and feet if you can.

Do any of you have any pics of some 8ish week olds? want to have a good idea of what to look for as far as combs go between cockerals and pullets at this age

I've got some 5, 9, and 12 week olds (and younger). Will try to get some pics for you early next week if nobody has posted any before then. Swamped for the next few days..........

This is a Black Copper male at 8 weeks

His comb is quite dark already and notice the wattles developing.

This is a female at 12/13 weeks. Notice how pale her comb is. And small by comparison even though it is a full month later. Also, no wattle development.
