Quote: I haven't had more than a couple chicks hatch with copper on heads already, but I would guess yes, its probably a boy...You will probably start to see copper on the wings & back in a few weeks. That would tell you for sure. It will look mottled.
Thanks for the replys, I know it's still early to tell gender, but his behavior seems to point in that direction...he has such a wonderful personality!!! Though I'm very concerned just lost 2 of my silkie chicks to coccidiosis (I believe). I am treating the BCMs now and hope if they have it, we can catch it!! I'm already soo attached to these lil guys..hoping they do ok!!!I haven't had more than a couple chicks hatch with copper on heads already, but I would guess yes, its probably a boy...You will probably start to see copper on the wings & back in a few weeks. Hey, fokls - I just posted this over on the Marans thread, and though I'd post here as well. These are comments made by a newer judge regarding the Marans class at a recent, large show in TX that he judged:
I enjoyed very much judging the Marans group. There were some nice birds
there. The black copper male really won me over. He is a nice bird.
Perhaps it is just me, but a male Marans that is good just stands out with
great majesty. Like some other breeds where the males stand out, I think
the Marans males will stand out and win their fair share. Some of the
Black Copper females needed more prominent copper color in their hackles.
I was also impressed with so many whites in the show. They were very nice.
I would think you won't have much trouble getting them accepted. they
could us a little more work on type, but that will come. Thank you for
allowing me to judge them. All the folks in the club are a great bunch to
be around. Thanks again. Jim Crain
Yeah I'm thinking its a boy he's the most ballsy one out of the four and super nosey has to be all up in everything we are doing in "HIS" brooder...One of my flamin' orange boys had that and one didin't..... go figure
I read back in the thread that the orange spots indicate the Wheaten gene. Someone mentioned this and I have seen it several times in my birds and it seem to be true. One of my flamin' orange boys had that and one didin't..... go figure
