Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have learned so much from reading the posts in this thread. From start to finish. It has shaped my views and thoughts about all things chicken. I might use different terms and wrong terms and right terms in the wrong places. Any way you slice it, I'm here to live and learn and maybe teach, too.

AWESOME - love this!

Haha. Just this summer my broody (now I'm second guessing broody and broodie) hen hatched out some Copper Marans chicks and I have kept one of the blue copper Marans cockerels. I named him Gilles (ZJeel) after Gilles Marini . If you know who that is he's a big hunk of man who is from France as is my Gilles. I speak to him in French. I only got one pullet from the bunch (hatch) and named her Collette. I should have realized the S is silent but was so intent on making sure I used the S I didn't even think of it. Bonjour!

P.S. to the Group: Sorry for being light-hearted about it all but I'm usually terribly serious. I have so much fun learning "chicken talk". From chickens and the people that love and breed them. I just raise them (and love them) and started reading this thread at BYC thinking I had a 50/25/25 shot at getting a black copper. Nope. Out of the seven that hatched I got six cockerels and one pullet. All blue. I learned that right here! Not a black in sight. My girl (pullet) looks so dark I was sure she was black from hatch but she's not a black at all.

It would be nice if the eggs cooperated and you got 3-6-3 out of every dozen! The 25-50-25 ratio is based on averages of a LOT of eggs, kind of like that 50-50 pullet/cockerel thing. In my first set in the incubator right now there are 7 BBS Marans along with some backyard mixes from a friend's flock. I'll be happy just to have live and healthy chicks, whatever color/sex. I am wanting all those Marans eggs to hatch though...

Here are some of my new BCMs. They started pecking at the legbands so I had to take ʻem off then got confused on who is who. I only have 7. And a crappy camera. :) So Iʻll have to try again another day. Theyʻre only 3 days old.

That second one sure is dark with the dark leg skin! Most of them have the leg fuzz going on nicely too. I got a toe punch for when mine are hatched (Day 11 now). I didn't want to be continually marking them with Sharpies as it wore off or use the colored zipties either. For hatching in case I'm not home it was suggested I could put each Marans egg under a plastic berry box so each chick will be with their parentage-marked eggshell when I find them. I'm going to try that since this is a test batch and the incubator is not nearly full (GQF cabinet model that will hold almost 200 chicken eggs!)

Hello Vicki, nice to see you around these parts !

Hope you and your birds are doing well .........

Hey Ray! I'm good, just crazy busy this year. Working on thinning down to the breeding stock I'm going to hold over for winter. Its wicked cold today, and super windy. I think it is gonna be 18 tonight, so spent alot of time winterizing pens, buildings and etc

They always do that for a day maybe then you don't see them do that anymore. PUT THE BANDS BACK ON LOL. I have seen them almost drag a chick around by the leg band. Usually it is just a couple that do that. Once they figure out EVERYONE has them they ignore them.

I hope you get a good hatch in any case. I'm also just glad to get something to hatch at all. I love them all. Even the "mutts". They are the chicks of favorite chickens I've had for years now. It would be nice to get all pure breeds but it's not going to happen. At least not in this backyard. Getting some new eggs from someone else is always a treat. They are expensive though so I just have high hopes. Maybe next spring I'll try again and get the one(s) for the reason I started reading this thread. I hope no one minds if I hang out a bit around here. This thread is fascinating.

Fully understand !

Trying to find the time myself to go through the Marans pens to thin them out,,,,, and the cold weather coming is taking up all the daylight hours I get after work.

I'd love to see pics of what you're growing out if you can find the time to get them and post ! Always nice " eye candy "
