Black Copper Marans discussion thread

This is the chick I was talking about. I could understand a little white, but its almost every feather on its chest and back. My blue and splash coppers from a different breeder didn't have any white on them and this was the only one that hatched from this breeder, so I have nothing to compare it to.
It is not looking normal to me. I thought you were referring to the white on the chest that the chicks are born with.
It is looking like lacing on the first picture and the white looks to be gold tinted on the second picture...

I would send a picture of the chick to the person you got them from... Someone jumped the fence or something ....

I have contacted them and they went and checked the chicks they hatched and they have it too, so they are going to send new eggs when they get a new breeding pen set up. They say nothing got mixed, but it looks like there was a cuckoo in the background somewhere. Sad part is I think its a cockerel so I can't even use it for a layer :(

Yea... Mystery solved!
Dang shame you aren't local.
I have a friend looking for pet quality cuckoo marans...

Are this cockeral's feet and legs as dark or black as the photo makes them look ? How old is he ? Can you post a photo of him ?

I think the lighting made his feet look darker than they normally do. It was taken inside the coop and it was pretty closed up. Here is a picture my daughter took of him not long ago. He's about 20 weeks old.

I'm open to hearing the good and the bad on this male if anyone would be willing & can tell anything from this not-so-good photo.

Brada Puhi - chunky little ones you have there! It looks like many have pure white leg fuzz...that will likely equate to white shank feathering, which is not something you'll want to use for breeding. Hope I'm wrong, but just wanted to mention it.

Aloha e Wynette,

You have a good eye. Many of them do have white feathering on the legs. Not good, huh? I wonder where that came from? Is that from splash? Wheaten? Iʻll keep track of that.

Mahalo nui, Puhi
