Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Congratulations to desertmarcy! Her BCM cockerel just won Best Continental at the Tuscon Pigeon and Poultry show! Not the best picture, but the best one of him that I had.
Thanks for posting, Mary, but a correction--he won Reserve Continental, not Champion (Best) Continental. A WCB Polish won Champion Continental. I did win Champion Turkey, though!

So you will get a lemon hackle? do they show any dark feathers in the tail. I have only ever seen isabelle leghorns. also, i guess from saying you have done 3 hatches, is it that the gene is not usually expressed, or requires a certain combination in order to allow it to express... Looks like an awesome and really fun project :) you are always up to something interesting LOL :)!!!

I have splits she is my first lav from that pen. splits will give you 25% lavs 50% splits and 25% black.... I think that is right.....dang brain....let me check that....I fixed it....if that is wrong let me know. yes they would look kinda like the leghorn. most plain lavs I have seen in Marans are really copper you can see the cream in the hackles and saddles.

Hi all! I'm new to the thread - just got my first BCM pullet a few months ago. She has very little copper color though, so we won't be breeding her. I also just hatched out two FCBM chicks. One we had to put down, but the other is healthy, and such a cutie. Can you sex them at a week old? Also, are there indicators at this age that he/she will be pretty? Here's some pictures:

Not really able to determine sex of a Marans until they are several weeks older. Not having much copper is not necessarily a dis qualifier for a breeder. You just breed her to a rooster that is abundant in copper and the babies will even out.
