Black Copper Marans discussion thread

have you calibrated your hygrometer? they tend to be wrong. mine read about 5-8% lower than they are. I try not to let mine get over 40%. lower is better. at hatch I bump it up but it goes way higher when they hatch. my Hatcher temp is a little lower than the incubator....not much but some and it works great.

I hope you can figure it out.....it is a learning curve for everyone and when.it works for you DONT TINKER WITH IT!

So, I know that the black coppers are not supposed to have a green sheen to them, but all of mine do. There is no mossiness and they have a good amount of copper, I am just not sure how to breed out the green sheen.
I asked on the Marans Club forums and was told by a Breeder and APA judge that the green sheen IS desirable, you just don't want a purple sheen.

I have not calibrated but I have 4 of them between two machines and they are all relatively close. I am trying now to keep it between 20 and 40. I put in a little moisture when it gets below 20. Previously I was keeping the tray full. Lower is better.

LOVE that beautiful beetle green...my youngest cockerel is 4 months and in the sun he's just so green. Against the copper it's just stunning. Good to know straight from the APA judge about that, thank you.

I put foil over most of the (one) original plastic water tub in my GQF 1266 for the first part, vents wide open, as described in the Dry Hatch Method posting on BYC. I do let it go completely dry before I fill it up as recommended. At lockdown I have to put a big 13" X 9" baking pan in with a huge kitchen sponge on end for more surface area and close up the two large vents to get it to 65%. I always keep the ventilation holes open (the smaller ones, two on top and two on bottom in the back). We have a wood pellet stove for heat with an open teakettle on it to help keep the room humidity up a bit and there is also a 45 gallon fish tank with an aquaponics tub on top of it. The room temp and humidity have a LOT to do with what goes on in the incubator I have found. Can you all visualize my living room now?
