Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Let them grow out for a bit...I had one roo that I thought was lovely, then he got too much color in his breast....another roo was BUTT UGLY but in the end, he is my main roo, grew out of ugly stage into a super nice roo. I do not pick my roo until after 6 months as they still are changing. Unless they get lots of color in the chest, then they are out of the breeding program....some is fine.....

Thanks, that was my thoughts that they were still changing. I'm hearing too much color of the breast is not good, thanks!

well sad to say it didn't hatch, lockdown was yesterday and i finally gave up on it. I had a feeling it wouldn't because it had that more chalky texture rather than the smooth silky texture and the chalky ones don't hatch well. So to satisfy my hatching itch and not run a nearly empty incubator I put 48 mutt eggs on the next shelf Lockdown this weekend! Now i had better go and put a notice at the feed store that i have brown egg layer chicks' s... LOL I just can't stand to shut down the incubator..

Bummer it didn't hatch, RL - but, surely you've gotten more of those since then? I'd save up as many as you can in a 10-day period & keep on trying!!

I have more but not like that one, it was a really oddball. most of them are like the rest of the ones in the bowl.. I have 4 of the darkest ones going in today but they are more l ike 5's... I am now working on my F2's so i am hoping for a darker egg color in the next generation. On the day that i found that egg, I had found a hen had got out of the pen during the day (my bad i had not latched the cleaning door properly), so I scooped her up and put her back in, but i'm wondering if she kind of retained or held back that day's egg because of stress and it got a double coating LOL!!!!

I have a Copper that just started laying about two weeks ago and her eggs seem very large for a new layer. I weighed them and they are consistently coming in at 59 grams! My other three newly laying Coppers are around 47. All are about 6.5 months old. The eggs are pleasantly dark, but not remarkable.

Is 59 grams large for a newly laying Copper?
