I am getting mossy chicks from two non-mossy parents and the roo had no halo. does anyone know
genetically what would cause this to happen?

The BC Marans are subject to produce Mossy chick at any time. Most all BC Marans have tainted blood from earlier Wheaten influence. Any thing that produces Mossy chicks in large numbers should be culled from the breeder flock. It is much easier to pin point the culprit if you can find a way to single mate. Don

I sold the roo but kept nine of the babies to grow them out and see how they turn out. I am almost regretting selling the roo before I figure if it's one of the girls it's coming from, however they have not produced chicks like this with any other roo. But the roo did not look wheaten in any way, in fact he was mahogany. I am trying to figure out how to do the single matings, but it's a work in progress. I think 2014 will be a good year for fine tuning my system.

Two of these chicks (males) are really really mossy, copper feathers allover the breast. I probably won't bother to grow those two out.

is there Pure untainted Black Copper Marans out there somewhere ?
or does Pure Black Copper Marans have wheaten among other things in their make-up ? much like other breeds & varieties that we must work around to reach one's goals(what-ever they might be) .

Some said that mossy birds make the darkest eggs.

So far I hatched some mossy birds and they came from the darkest eggs Iʻve seen yet. Weʻll see when they grow up.

My wonderful - and possibly enabling?- husband got me the APA 2010 Standard of Perfection. I was thinking marans were in it, but they're not. Is there a way I can print out the insert that I hear includes them? Does anyone know where I can get that?
