Black Copper Marans discussion thread

If you find that let us know too! We RARELY see eggs that dark. 6-7 are common. Most who get eggs that dark.... don't sell those birds either. I wouldn't.... EVERY sell one that dark.
I've been exchanging e-mails with someone that has 7s and 8s. I haven't seen the pictures yet, so I believe it when I see it - and I'll keep you posted as well!

Meanwhile, I'll continue my the pursuit of the Holy Grail: 8s and 9s...

Pictures can be deceiving, you need to see the eggs in person. These are some of one of my last years pullets eggs - same eggs in both pics. In real life, eggs colour was somewhere in between the two pics. A solid "6".

Hi! This thread is huge..I just joined here and wanted to read through this thread but then realized it's 800+pages and I don't know how to search within a thread yet.

I am totally new to chickens, we just hatched 5 black copper maran chicks 3 weeks ago and I am very curious to learn more about them. I've read they are the most difficult to sex, but figure you all might have tricks or things that usually stand out to you. They are all about the same size. We ordered 6 eggs each from two different people and 4 of the ones that hatched were from just one person (if that makes sense) The 4 from the same person all look similar but the one from the other is a lot darker. Does this just depend on the line??

Also, 4 of them are getting all their feathers and one is still soft and fuzzy like when it hatched. Does that indicate anything as far as sexing them or is it all just a waiting game?? Just curious! I don't know how to post pictures or I'd include some!

I find the Marans fairly easy to sex, look for the more prominent combs they seem to show this even when they are tiny. I haven't had any luck with feather sexing with BCM's Yes some come out darker than others. I always go by the combs.

My boy's comb was pretty obvious by 3 weeks:

700

And unmistakable at 5 weeks:

700

This is going to sound stupid but how do u start a new forum

If you look above the posts on this page, there is a link to "start a new thread" ,,,, the new thread would be under the same category which is "breeds, genetics, and showing"

if your topic is of a different nature, you may want to go to one in that area before using the link provided

hope this helps you some

Wow! I think I have mostly boys if that is the case, they are all very similar to that. Only one (maybe two) have little tiny ones.
I'll try to post pics of them, hopefully it works, I'm new to this

They are all looking so awkward now that they are getting feathers, HAH. They were such perfect little fluff balls a couple weeks ago. How fast they grow...lol

Just can't believe it was only a couple weeks ago. First time ever having or being around chicks and I am just astounded at how quickly they change!
