Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Wow! I think I have mostly boys if that is the case, they are all very similar to that. Only one (maybe two) have little tiny ones.
I'll try to post pics of them, hopefully it works, I'm new to this

They are all looking so awkward now that they are getting feathers, HAH. They were such perfect little fluff balls a couple weeks ago. How fast they grow...lol

Just can't believe it was only a couple weeks ago. First time ever having or being around chicks and I am just astounded at how quickly they change!

If my eyes are seeing it right 1,2,&4 are Roo's. Am I correct?

That would be my guess too.

That's what I would guess according to people saying they've had luck going off of the comb! I am so new to all this (first time ever hatching) and so I get really anxious trying to figure it all out. We have 4 bresse as well and 3 of them are HUGE and one is so tiny. Have some black silkies and cream legbars in the incubator now. I got a little too carried away ordering eggs, but I love how the black copper marans look. They were the first breed I thought of when we started researching chickens and I originally found them trying to find dark egg layers and became sort of obsessed with them!

BCM are wonderful adults too. The two girls I got last year have enchanted my family with their silly antics, always the first to get into everything and ever so curious! Sexing them is not much more difficult than most breeds, the combs are good indicators just look at the size and the color. The boys will grow prominent and pink up very early on while the ladies stay small and delicate. I have a pair I hatched out several weeks ago and I ended up with one Roo and one Hen. Can't wait to see if this roo will work out as my BCM breeding boy. So far, I am not holding my breath. His feet have white feathers which I hope to see grow out. Otherwise he may end up as a tasty stew and back to the drawing board for me!

My BCM pullet is quite the character too! She is always out on her own, getting out of the chicken yard with no thought to her flock mates. Curious is an understatement! She got attacked by the dog, but managed to survive by finding the smallest escape route, which took her under the deck stairs. A few days later, still limping, still missing feathers, she told me off to let her out of isolation and back to the big world, where she promptly returned to her escapist wandering ways. <3 her! And I'm so happy to have a BCM roo now. Like you, I'm hoping he will turn out to be a keeper.

I finally did it!!! i have sold my wheaten marans flock so that i can focus more on the black and blue coppers!! My BCM's are taking over LOL!!!

it was hard because every time i walked out to the coop i changed my mind. Now the roo (king arthur) keeps staring at me with this look in his eye like i am a traitor and i sold them out!!!

Well Runaway... have no fear. If you need any wheaten influence... my BCMs have plenty of it and I will hook you up.

Where are you from happy french man? I'm in Eastman Ga.

Chad... Hey. I am in Macon Ga. What kind of birds do you have? I have Black Coppers and a few Blue Copper hens. I am fairly new to the area but I see on the map you are not that far away. I guess about 30 or so miles from Eastman. I am in the south of Macon, not in the city itself .
