Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Couldn't get the page to load, but will try again later.

Okay, DH explained that Macbeth has their own personal line of products, and parts numbers without corresponding, off-the-shelf equivalents. So, we can't get an actual take on the type of lighting used- although he did mention the 65 was likely 6500K (very high range in color spectrum.) He also added that their paint line is also theirs alone as well, and so has their own coded color numbers, so this may be difficult to reproduce from that source.

However, he suggested that once you can get averaged, accurate colors on something, you could try going to a Sherwood Williams and use their scanner to get less expensive latex colors mixed just for you. You would have numbers that can be readily available. Just thoughts…

I have not raised Black Copper Marans from chicks before, so I need some help. I got eggs from a breeder & hatched them, they're now going on 8 weeks old. What should I look for when choosing a cockerel to keep? I'm not wanting to raise them, but still want a nice one for a flock rooster. I have one young one that has a lot more coloring coming out than the others, is this good or bad? Is he the one I want to keep or should I choose one with less coloring at this point, I'm just in the dark here. Some advice would be appreciated.

8 weeks old might be a bit early to tell much. At six months you can tell much more. Can you post some photos from side view and front?

Does he have color spots on his chest?
What color are his feet? Does he have a fair amount of feathering all along outside leg shanks, lining down the outside toes? Is there any feathering on middle toes?

Eggs, finally. Not as dark as hoped for, but not complaining.

Our mossy girl in the layer pen doesn't lay the darkest of the eggs (this egg up right corner) but they are always Jumbo, and have crazy patterns. lol

If you're not wanting to raise them, choose the one that tickles your fancy most!

The ones that have more coloring at this age are typically males.

If I was keeping a flock "just for fun" or just for pretty eggs, I'd personally keep the largest male...simply because when I free range, a larger male will be able to fend off "some" predators better. JMO.

How about i get a copy of the egg chart and measure it for you guys.. pretty much what you would gain from this is an ability to define the exact color that is printed on the chart that represents say a 4. It is very hard to measure curved surfaces, so eggs are not so easy to measure but it can be done with the right equipment. I can measure the color of eggs using a small area view on the instrumentation... .

Really the most interesting part in this would be to get experts together at an egg show and have them rate the eggs according to their color grade, then you can analyze the data and you would be able to see the actual percieved range of what a #4 is compared to the actual #4 on the chart.

oh yes and by the way.... I don't work for sherwin williams ...

way to cool for that LOL!!!

i think the hair samples to represent the right color of copper is way cool... we could define it as something like a wella 8N4 or something, then hordes of marans lovers would be rushing out to sallys to get the hair samples

Look what I am getting from one of my new pullets

The egg in the middle is from a 2+ year old EE hen and the other is from my SBEL pullet. Nice size for a pullet and decent color too.... just wish it was more glossy.... very matte finish on that egg almost looks like chalk in person.
