Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Hi there. I'm new to Marans and to this thread. I have a 7 or 8 month old BCM hen who is starting to show typical signs of being ready to lay. I'm just curious as to what ages your own BCM hens laid their very first eggs. Thanks!

One of my Marans hens, the biggest, laid her first egg at 18 weeks. The others started around 20 weeks. mine are from Bwalden here on BYC :)

I think you guys should post photos of your eggs to compare sizes and colors JS
Egg photos are notoriously unreliable. The very same eggs photographed with different background, lighting, etc. can vary WILDLY. Even taking a photo next to the "official" egg color charts don't give a true evaluation in my experience due to reflection, etc. The closest thing I've seen is to use a hole punch on the egg chart, put the egg in question behind the chart and match it up colorwise that way. Sizes are easier...just weigh them.

I agree! I just want to see some pics of those beautiful eggs!

RIR egg is there for color comparision, for what it's worth.

Marans eggs are #2 and #4 in this photo. Zanna has some good egg photo comparisons posted on this thread, showing how different conditions make the same eggs look two shades lighter or darker.

They really do look like chocolate eggs!!! I wish I had room for some Marans. Those eggs are absolutely gorgeous.
