Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have two new little ones, they are 3 weeks old. They were hatched-out by their Wyandotte "Momma"..her first set of eggs to hatch. They are feathering-in so fast, little buggers can really get around!
I would like, if possible, to know what sexes they are. I understand if the pics are too fuzzy. I just took them this-morning, I thought they were good until I loaded them ...hahaha, I need to go back out later and see if I can get better pics. Thank you for your time! Hope everyone & their chooks are doing well

I don't really track ages .... I lose focus on that so fast ....

So what I do is have the roos that I'm going to cull in a batchler pen ....They have room and are outside - but not free ranging and running about - that kind of keeps the muscle tone lighter - then I feed them lots of food and when it is around Thanksgiving time - I cull them - that way the weather is cooler and their bodies can rest for a few days in cooler temps.

Thanks. The idea of limiting their activity sounds like a good one.

Yeah - not in a tiny cage so they can't move ... but like a small dog run or very large dog cage (depending on how many roos you have) - so they can move and look and scratch and stretch- but not really run or fly and build up strong muscles - it works and they are very tasty.

I vote for a pair of pullets.

So since were talking about the Morans, does anyone know or can advise on breeding the rooster with a Comet?

Thank you
We hatched out some eggs from our golden buff hens (essentially the same as I Comet I think) and our black copper Marans cock. It was interesting to me because the pullets were black and the cockerels were white with some black flecks. I did not expect the sexlinkage to go to the next generation. I did not grow them out so don't know how they turned out as far as laying or meat.

Im not sure what that specific poster meant but I know when I process chickens and turkeys I let the birds "rest" in the refrigerator of about 3 days before freezing or eating. The meat needs to go through rigor and it takes a few days for it to pass.

chicken pickn and baunlee ...

That is exactly what I meant. If you don't let the carcass "rest" it will be extra extra tough, taste a little off ... I'm not sure of all the benefits ...

But I process in the fall with cool air - and just keep them in a big roaster pot in a cool/cold garage - so it is not taking up refrig space for days .... then cook them.
