Black Copper Marans discussion thread

at what age do they usually start laying eggs?
I've heard Marans are late layers. Some of them don't start laying until 32 weeks. Can anyone verify this? I have a pullet that is 25 weeks and is not showing any signs of getting closer to point of lay. Her full sister did lay her first egg two weeks ago, but nothing from anyone of the other siblings yet.

27 weeks here from a late Jan hatch. Will also depend on when they hatch; later in the spring, coming to POL as the days get short they will take longer and not lay until days are getting longer again unless under artificial lights. Same for any chicken

I have 12 shipping today from Meyer !!!

I am convinced that it is less of a breed trait when they start laying than it is a line and management trait. We have some that start laying at 18 weeks and most start laying between 21-22 weeks. This year the Marans were laying before the hatchery Leghorns were so calling them late layers is not accurate. You should ask whoever you get your stock from when their flock starts laying. Some breeders select for breed traits and type first, some select for utilities and production first. There will be a large difference depending on what the line was breed for.

I'm waiting on 2 pullets to start laying anytime soon. They hatched on my birth day so there's no way I'll forget the date. it was in february 25 of this year. I'm guessing i'll get a first egg before this month ends.

My flock is now 7 weeks, I have three BCM pullets and one roo, he is the boss of the whole flock of 20 that is for sure. I am new so not sure they are colored, feathered in a good way or not. Two pullets have feathered legs and one doesnt. Here is Cogburn and Opal
