Black Copper Marans discussion thread

What do you find the BCM like to live with, work with/around? Do temperaments vary a lot within this breed? I'm curious about the breed, and personality is important to me. Oh yes of course, they're gorgeous, too,

Stunning GSD Warmheart and welcome to the thread! I love my Marans they are very easy to have, be around, work around. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule but mine are very easy going.

Thanks, Raven! He's a Czech GSD, very over-enthusiastic, clown-like, and bouncy like Tigger. ;) Oddly, he gets along great with the chickens!

Mable the Easter Egger attempting a mind-meld with The Doofus... "My mind to your mind, your thoughts to my thoughts..."

Thanks for letting me know that the Marans can be easy to work around. I'd love a hen someday, for those chocolate eggs, though my priority is calm, good-natured birds. Our flock is small and always will be, so, our birds are our family.

I love reading this thread. Thank you all for sharing your information and pictures!

My biz partner just had a batch of BCM hatch. They are feathering in black and dark brown barred. She has hatched out of that coup before, without this problem. Any thoughts?

Parkmule~

Do they look like this?

If so, this is called autosmal barring, can't remember what exactly it means, but it should not be in the Marans if I remember correctly. This can be coming forward in these chicks from a couple or more generations back. It's my opinion that when we see this in Marans that something else is in the genetics. Hope others come by and correct me if I am wrong as I don't wish to give incorrect info and also hope others share their opinions with you.

You know...I'm curious about something....anyone ever wonder why we only see this in the Black Coppers?
I have never seen this in the Blue Coppers, nor have I seen anyone post a photo of a Blue Copper with it asking questions. Has anyone else?

Would be curious to hear from someone who has seen this autosmal barring in Blue Coppers.

Hey yall. I posted this under illness tab but haven't gotten any responses yet. Since he is an marans, and yall are so familiar with feathered legs, I though it would be ok to post here too. (?)

10 month old marans roo. His leg scales are not raised or rough looking at all - but it appears that there are a few missing within the feather line down his legs.
Where the scales are 'missing', the skin where they were is red - almost raw looking. These aren't good pictures - it was dark enough in the coop that I was shooting blind until the flash went off.
Can you see enough to have an idea what I'm talking about? These makes it look like there are long, almost bloody areas but it's really clearly outlined scale spaces that are smooth and level with the scales next to them - but tender looking and red. And, it's ONLY under the feathers. There isn't a single red spot on the clean side of his legs.
He's not happy about having his legs handled - but that might very well have nothing to do with the red areas, he's a little 'touchy'.
Should I treat as if he has scaly leg mites???

Wonder if this is his reticulate scales that you are seeing. On all of my Marans they have a nice vermillion colored reticulate scales that follow the line of the shank feathering almost under the feathering, but sort of right next to it. Wonder if you look under the feathering if you see this up the leg and down to the toe. I hope it is not scaly leg mites and that is just the reticulate scales you are seeing.
