Black Copper Marans discussion thread

All chicks hatch with yellow legs. If they are still yellow in a few weeks THEN you have a problem.

Mine all hatch with pinky white feet & legs. I had to wait for a newly hatched chick to take a pic.

If so, this is called autosmal barring, can't remember what exactly it means, but it should not be in the Marans if I remember correctly. This can be coming forward in these chicks from a couple or more generations back. It's my opinion that when we see this in Marans that something else is in the genetics. Hope others come by and correct me if I am wrong as I don't wish to give incorrect info and also hope others share their opinions with you.


You know...I'm curious about something....anyone ever wonder why we only see this in the Black Coppers?
I have never seen this in the Blue Coppers, nor have I seen anyone post a photo of a Blue Copper with it asking questions. Has anyone else?

i would love to learn more about this, it looks like my mystery chick that happened in a batch of 10 bcms i bought. I posted her somewhere. She looked the same as the others before feathering a bit.

She is thinking of selling off the entire flock. They were said to be from Wade Jean lines...But how many generations ago...? So, that is all she can do right? Sell the flock and get new stock....? It is weird it did not show up until now. She has hatched out several batches, and not seen this before. But know she is.

The autosomal barring appearng means there is foreign blood somewhere close up in the pedigree (within 4 generations somewhere... probably Wheaten). Why has it shown up now? Well, if one crossed 2 strains and had only 1 side of one of the 2 strains as a carrier of the unwanted color( 1/4 of foundation parents) , it could take several generations for carriers to be bred to carriers, such that the foreign color would show.
I don't know the heritage of these birds. At least would cull both parents and the chicks from this hatch. Tough, tough.

Just wondering what's the oldest you've ever had a little roo start growing it's comb? And the earliest you've had a pullet start to grow hers? Just watching all these babies; I"m already over run with boys and now one I thought was a girl has a comb that is starting to grow a bit. They are about 10 weeks old

I have some BCM, and I was wondering if you could grade my rooster. I have an opportunity to buy a quad, which I plan to do, but wondering if I should hold on to this guy as well. He is 5 months old, I don't like his feet color, they are fairly pink. maybe his tail could be bigger? He also is slowly getting more color on his wings, and saddle, and i dont know if that is something they get with first molt... what do you think?

If you are buying a good quality foundation quad... from a reputable line and breeder, get rid of this boy. His tail is too upright and he has no chest. Looks like a Langshan, which is what Marans look like when they are poorly bred. Can you go over to the Marans of America website? They should have a diagram of the perfect Marans silhouette. Match this guy up against it. He has several crucial angles that need to be fixed. You don't want that lack of symmetry siring in your flock. Use the new quad instead.
