Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Wow nice looking eggs!!!
Thanks. I just noticed they are much lighter looking posted on here than on my camera much less in person. Funny how the color gets washed a lot of the time.

I probably have asked this before but I forget...how do I get an egg shade (color) chart for my Maran eggs?
Here are a few eggs (3 Marans , along with 1 EE and 1 Cochin egg) I just brought in- the one on the far right and by itself in the other pic is all chalky, white spotty looking and it goes away when I wet it, but came right back as soon as it dried. Is that a good thing or not? Should it be incubated or not? I have another one that was purplish and chalky looking, but not spotty white like this one. They are all first year Maran layers. I also have 2 Olive eggers who hatched last spring and haven't laid any olive eggs yet...I'm getting some green eggs but just plain light green like my EEs have always laid.

Eggs that are coated like that don't hatch. Its frustrating, we all get them once in a while.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a couple of those chalky eggs I was going to put in the incubator. They were laid in the run. *sigh* I have no idea what makes them chalky like that. Is it a chemical reaction or something? I don't find these chalky eggs in my nest boxes, just on the coop floor and in their runs.
