Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Hi
I haven't posted much so I hope I'm doing this right..
I have a question about BCM's ...

How would a breeder end up hatching a blue cuckoo Marans when it was definitely supposed to be a BCM?
There are no cuckoo Marans in the flock whatsoever.
Any help?
Thank you
Have no idea. I can't wait to read the answer to this one.

Does the breeder have other chickens? Sounds like somebody jumped the fence...

I don't really have a great technique yet... it is a work in progress. When I start culling marans.... I will pick something that is a cull period. For example. I culled all chicks without feathered shanks. Just didn't want to have to worry about that issue. Was obvious cull it is a DQ. I also culled for middle toe feathering on chicks... I have since changed that practice as I find they will often LOSE the little feathers as they grow. When they are bigger I pick something I want to work on and cull for that as much as I can. Just an example eye color might be something you want to work on or combs. I figure if I pick one thing NEW every breeding to work on eventually I will get where I want to be. Something just seem to work on themselves as you cull. I didn't worry about egg color much, but I did hatch the darkest eggs I got last breeding season and now they are laying some nice color this year. I still do that to some degree, but not as sever as I did last season. Since I have SOOOOO MANY pullets right now I am going to take my time and REALLY CULL HARD for things I didn't last year, like size on the pullets. I want to have pullets that are truly BIG HEAVY birds and not ones that just look big. When I was worming I noticed the size difference on some pullets so I think they will be going soon. If I can get 6-8 really good pullets to work with I will be in better shape with the next group. I really miss my roos

I really had some good plans for them with these new pullets.... heart breaking really. 2 good roos .... gone

I still have some little roos from them growing out. I have one roo right now I really like but he is not quite as good as his dad. Sadly I only have a few more to watch grow up. It was mostly a pullet hatch wouldn't you know.

The person I got him from says she has no cuckoos whatsoever.... only BC M's

I think I see little teeny tiny bits of copper here and there in the neck. Not much , u have to look hard.. also he has a single green feather in his tail.. almost like bcm traits are poking thru.

Ugh! I was trying to post a pic of my bcm girls first eggs... they laid them a few days ago.. I am impatiently waiting for more lol.

For the life of me I cannot figure out how to post another pic!!!
Idk how I posted my roo...

Are you posting by phone or on the computer? Some people find they can't really post from phone or it is sporadic. From the computer, go to the reply screen below and look for a square with a little house in it. When you click on it a menu will pop up and you can click the "upload photos" button to find the picture on your computer.

I am learning as I go. That's why I love this thread and all the great folks on here! After this weekend I will be down to 5 boys from three breeders and 8 pullets from 2 breeders. Birds from one breeder I will not cull for size this generation because they had a near death experience at the hands of the PO, so I figured they would be a bit smaller than the birds that never had that kind of set back, but I will cull hard for size next generation. Right now I am culling the obvious stuff like what I've been posting. I am thinking right now I might pick the two best roos and the best two or three pullets and do single matings, hatch a few eggs from each to get an idea of what they are going to throw and then go from there. I will probably keep these remaining 5 boys until they hit at least the 6 month mark, unless something major crops up like side sprigs.

I am so sorry you lost your boys, it is really hard when you have grand plans to have them come to a screeching halt like that.

Maybe she only has black coppers, but possible cuckoo was in there from before she got them? Who knows...
