Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Well I used Tetroxy HCA because that was all my local feed store carried for respiratory symptoms. I have since ordered Gallimycin and will use it next time for several reasons. It only has to be given for 5 days versus 7-14 with Tetroxy HCA, and you only have to change it out every 3 days versus daily with Tetroxy HCA.

Just did my first treatment. 1 Tbs per gallon for the teenagers and adults, and a quarter tsp per quart for my chicks who are less then 8 weeks, That way they all get some, but it won't be too hard on the little one's system. Treating with duramycin, only thing I can find.

Here is my blue copper Marans, hatch in January. I think it's a pullet, but you can be the judge. The black cockerel next to her is from the same hatch, and is crowing. The eggs where from DMRippy. The copper is just starting to show nicely, too bad I couldn't capture it in the pictures.

Pretty! I think pullet, too.

The USPS has decided to cover their deficit they are going to charge a "fee" approximately 10 dollars per package for shipping of live animals, without in any way bettering the quality of their service. PLEASE take a minute to follow the link and click Submit a Formal Comment or send them an e-mail to the address listed and urge them NOT to do that. It may not sound like much but it ALREADY costs me $35-50 to ship a box of live chicks/birds. This $10 fee is going to choke small people like us. PLEASE pass the word around! This new regulation will apply to BEES, too, making our costs to bring in new stock for our beehives more expensive. PLEASE DO THIS! They are only accepting comments until May 24. https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2013/04/24/2013-09603/new-mailing-standards-for-live-animals-and-special-handling

I have two 10 month old roo's BCM and I am going to sell them to get more pullets for my flock. I only have one pullet right now. she is a BO. I thought I was getting pullets with the BCM and now Im stuck with these two crowing all day lol. I am wondering what do you all think I should sell them for? They are the ones in the avatar I have. of course they are much bigger now. Beauitiful copper and there tails are looking wonderful a slight color that beatle green when the light hits them. ALso what should I be feeding them? I mean I have the laying mesh and they free range all day until they go to sleep. Thank you again

Don't have any idea what the market is like in your area, but here in Oregon, unless the Cockerals are exceptional SOP wise they are not easy to sell. On Craigslist I advertise and see others advertising for $5 - $25 depending on quality. Check your local Craigslist. We have a local auction, they take 35% but if I have an excess from breeding, I can take 15 - 30 at a time, just drop them off and they all sell. Depending on who is at the auction that day (it runs every Tuesday AM year round) I get $4 - $12 a bird. They all get bought for butchering by the local Asian and Russian residents. Maybe you have something like this close to you? We also have several local "Chicken Swaps" and can sometimes sell them there. Mostly we do our own butchering unless we just have too many or are out of freezer space.

IMO I think what you are feeding them is just fine.

i would agree, i have 16 boys right now that i could use to not have. Craigslist has netted me two sales of roosters but they are few and far between. This auction sounds very interesting I will have to see if there is one in south florida..

That's crazy, at our auction last night we had BCM roos going for a few dollars each. But ALL the prices were down, eggs, chicks, growers and adults. It was buyers market for sure last night.
