Thank you for all the replys, folks. This girl is 5 months. I should get a weight on her, she's not completely grown out yet, not laying or filled out completely, but stands as tall as my cockerel, same age. She's got some qualities that I would like to breed forward -good hackle color, size..not sure on what she'll lay yet, but she hatched from a dark egg. But do NOT want to breed a DQ into my flock. I had someone call this week looking for colored egg layers, so she'll have to go. Boo.

Here is one of my hens, fatty. Not much hackle color. And the cockerel I'm working with. He does have some nice foot feathering, I'm not crazy about his tail set, -he tends to carry it much higher than this picture shows, and his hackle color is a nightmare. But this is what the raccoons have left me to work with...so there you go.

Good to know thanks Donna.  Just to clarify as it didn't quite seem to type out right, "if they are as month old with yellow legs that and their siblings are out of here."  If they are how old?

if chicks are a month old with yellow legs that chick and all of its siblings are out of here....never to be breed in my pens. yellow legs is recessive so it takes 2 copies to express so if you have one chick with yellow legs likely they ALL carry the genes for yellow legs.

STEAMED right now- neighborhood dog who roams the neighborhood and opens all the gates just opened 3 of my gates to get to my chickens and killed my most promising BCM cockerel. GRRRR. The neighbors are nice and they do have an electric fence for him but have been lax about keeping doors/gates shut. She promised to be more vigilant and I am putting hasp pins on all my gates even though it will mean my kids won't be able to handle the gates anymore. It's the first time he's killed anything although he has let himself into my yard before now. I am going to let it go as upsetting as it is, since our dog occasionally climbs our fence and gets their trash. Plus technically we are inside city limits although we are on the edge and it is a small rural town so we don't want to go alienating any neighbors.... so I just told her I don't want it to happen again.

Lonnyandrina I feel your pain. A dog just killed my most promising looking bcm pullet (about 6 weeks old). Unfortunately I can't do much since it was my dog I thought I had fixed all the gaps where the little ones were getting out onto the lawn but clearly not. Oh well, I'll just have to hatch a load more!

Ditto times thirty five! My son's (temporary resident) dog killed all but one hen and one guinea. The good, the bad and the old layers all died in one day. It is my experience that once a dogs kills a chicken they never stop. Fortunately, I had a few nest with fresh eggs that went to the incubator so I am not without chicks but all hope of breeding the BCMs I want is gone for the present time.
