Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I purchased some very nice BCM eggs, and they all hatched out. However even thought i was the first and only person they saw ,, they are all so frightend of me, and anyone. It is very difficult to get near any of them They are 3 weeks old, and I will be putting them out side soon, so here's my question, Is this typical of the breed? Are they typically flighty? also what is the usual temperment of the cocks,, I have two in the hatchings, and 14 hens. so far

I have 1 pullet that wants to keep her left eye closed most of the time. It doesnt look infected and ive treated it with eye drops several times. Any sugestions?

There is so much info on this thread! I have yet to read it all.

Can anyone help me with my Maran. Just got this little one. 3 months old said to be pure black copper maran.

I am also new to chicken keeping so learning every day.

I noticed this one has copper on the neck every so slightly.

What has me more worried is the white feathers on the wings (just 1-2 feathers at the ends of the wings).

There is a slight shimmer (very very slight), but I thought this came with hens and roosters in the maran breed.

Here is a photo of the face.

Hi,

The white will usually molt out as she grows. It's common to see it in Black Coppers and Blue Copper as well.

Oh Good to know! whats your thoughts on this one being a hen or rooster so far at this age?

I've never found mine to be flighty. I think it depends on the line, not the breed. I hatched out some ameraucana from another breeder last year and they were terrified of me. I couldn't walk by their hatchling tote brooder without them freaking out. My own ameraucana were never like that. I didn't keep the new chicks as even as larger juveniles they just weren't very friendly.
