Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Blue Black and Splash are a case of incomplete dominance.

Here is one. On the top is one parent a Black(bl+ and bl+). Not sure what the plus means, incomplete dominance perhaps.

On the left is the other parent, who is a blue(Bl and bl+). Bl is capital because it is dominant over the black. So even though the Blue parent caries the bl+ gene, it is blue.

When making sperm(or egg) one sperm gets one gene and another sperm gets the other gene. 50% of the sperms will have either of the two. Same with eggs.

When that mixes with the other egg or sperm, you get new combinations. If the offspring carries the Bl with a bl+, it will be blue. If it only has Bl+, it can only be black. It did not inherit the splash gene from the blue parent.

Thank you so much

I just processed 8 roo's from my spring/summer hatch. I'm trying to understand the sop for BCM. These all have gone to the freezer but the 1st one I'm posting, I thought was a nice looking bird. (The 1st three pic's are all the same bird.) Can you all look and tell me? I thought maybe he had too much color. I could never get a good pic of his chest but I couldn't really see any mossiness there. The other 2 roo pic either had a lot of color and a bigger tail. I'm not looking to breed or sell but learn about what I already have.
I have 3 BCM hens. 2 are solid black with a green sheen and 1 is mostly mossy. I really shouldn't be hatching eggs from her. Is that correct? Thanks, sue

Thanks to those who gave feedback on my girls. Now that I know I have 3 cuckoo marans, can anyone tell me how to pronounces "marans?"

I know I might be able to find this information somewhere in here, but it is a lot easier to ask - specially this being page 800 and something!!!!

Does any one here sell, or know a breeder that does, hatching eggs, chicks, pullets or very young laying hens in the 8s or 9s on the color chart?

I'm close to Olympia, WA area.

Thank you!!

If you find that let us know too! We RARELY see eggs that dark. 6-7 are common. Most who get eggs that dark.... don't sell those birds either. I wouldn't.... EVERY sell one that dark.
