Happy day today to have set eggs from the lovely DMRippy and Wynette! Thank you ladies!

I was also very happy to see in person how my girls compare egg color wise to those that I've admired here for so long. There were a few that wowed me for their rich russet color. ..very beautiful. Size wise mine are on the larger scale as were Wynettes however mine are very round as were DMRippys. Fun stuff.

Is there a standard, so to speak, for size? Mine average 74g but some are 80-89g! Those are the norm for a couple of my girls. Nice but a pain when you can't close the carton or realize they are under the fan and won't allow the bator lid to close sealed!

Here's a pic of mine. I should have taken a pic of the full bator today. .just didn't was having to relax after a stressful unpacking. .lol..you guys (ladies) did an amazing job at that BTW! Kudos!

I don't know of a standard size. My Coppers don't usually lay a huge egg.... my Cuckoos lay HUGE eggs. But they are not as dark. Size on eggs comes with age every molt eggs get a little bigger. My youngest girls are just over a year and my oldest are over 2. I guess you could breed for eggs size but I will work on the bigger issues first. Don't want to loose what I have worked for 3 years for. Can't wait to see egg color on the next generation of pullets.

And packaging was wonderful but you aren't kidding on that relationship! Hahaha
O I agree with egg size not being anywhere near priority. ..just thinking "out loud" if you will.

I will say huge eggs are harder to hatch. I have some white leghorns that lay eggs SO BIG you can't close an XL egg carton on them.... they will develop but will not hatch. I was talking with a guy that runs a local hatchery and he said the same thing..... the bigger eggs don't hatch.

I've read the same thing and by now tracking weight it will be interesting to see. Though if they lay large eggs wouldn't they have come from a large egg therefore large eggs do hatch. Obviously I would agree the out of the ordinary may not but a consistently large layer should. Just my thinking.

We have some golden buff (sexlinks) in the layer flock. They lay every day, HUGE eggs (3-3.2 oz. not uncommon and no way the egg carton closes!). We've hatched BCM crosses from them just fine.

We had a similar conversation on the CCL thread and were talking about PMS colors..... I used to be in printing and those are the STANDARD in printing.

Equating hues with haircolor is very visual- many equivalent colors can even be found in most drugstores and supermarkets.

DMRippy, I am not familiar with PMS colors- can you explain this, and the color gold discussed, please. Sounds intriguing. Or, the link would be great if you would not mind.

IMO, if there was a possible standard of accepted range of colors from eggs to plumage (also showing straw to melanized) this conciseness would clear up vagueness and the confusion for many newbies or even some breeders as well.

PMS is Pantone Color Matching system..... it is the STANDARD for ink colors in the printing industry. I was not involved in the gold discussion. It was a blue egg discussion. Gold in PMS if very limited and are usually metallic colors....same with copper. It would be similar to paint chips you get at the hardware store.

Sorry for the heavy photo post but home with a sick 5 year old today and just vegging on the internet. This is my BCM boy doing "the Dance" then the Chase ensues












and she is outta there!!! He's only been at it for about a month

Hoping he wont loose the tips or part of his wattles but winter still has it's grip on New Hampshire.

he has some spotting in his upper breast area between the hackles in front but it's less than I anticipated him having when they first popped up and I almost culled him for it.
