... this is my rooster number 2 that supposed to be BCM,

however he had a lot of yellow on him when he was a chick and he's the biggest of the two Roos that I had bought off craigs list before I knew anything. They were supposed to be hens! :/ see the white in his one tail feather and all those different colors of I called them orange myself, I don't think he is a true Black Copper Marans

White in the tail is just a very common fault and so is the wheaten and birchen bleed through. Many have cuckoo and wheaten in their past. The wing though looks

Common fault also is a floppy comb like the female. But what are those feathers around his neck doing? Are they curled outward or?

Hi everyone! I have some Black Copper Marans chicks coming in a week! Yay!!!

But then I mentioned it to my feed store guy this morning and he said that they're terrible layers. Boo!!! Is that right?

He sold me some chicks last year that I swear lay at least an egg every day no matter what the weather - I think they are BSLs - so he has high standards on quantity. I don't need a high production one but now I'm curious if I'm only going to get a couple eggs a week from each hen... Or less.

What is your experience?

He has a No-Crow velcro collar on him as I live in the city! Other wise he'd have nothing else on him. Did you see his brother in a previous post by me??

Was it yellow, or white? It is common for the BCM chicks to have some white, but not yellow. I have never seen a BCM chick with yellow, so he may have something else going on in his genetic background.

Rate of lay will vary with the particular line someone has. I've had some great laying Black Coppers, and I've had some poor ones. Also, the ones that lay the darker eggs will tend to lay less often since it seems to take time for that color to happen while the egg is moving through the oviduct.

Really, you can't beat some of the hatchery hybrids for egg laying, they lay great. The black and red sexlinks--which go by various different names--are excellent layers. They have been bred for production and large eggs. Some of them will burn out pretty fast also, and quit laying after about 2 years. But before then, boy do they lay!
