Black Copper Marans discussion thread

The carnation Comb is where the backend of the comb has a cluster of points. This was breed into the Marans with people looking for darker eggs. The sprig or carnation should not be bred forward. Don

There would be no points off just a pure DQ.
Thanks for the clarification. With that description, I think that's what I have

okay, now you have to tell me what that is

Penedesenca. It is a Spanish breed of chicken that lays dark eggs and has a unique carnation comb, also called a "King's comb". It is said they were crossed into Marans to improve egg color. But they have that comb that Marans shouldn't have plus white earlobes, so if those traits pop up, they are an indication of their blood having been mixed into the Marans.

And I ALWAYS have to look up the spelling! Probably why Don abbreviated it

Thanks for the great advice on summer coops!
Another question...I bought some 4 week old blue copper Marans straight run chicks that came from north woods farms. They are not pecking each other to the point of wounds, but they are really aggressive to each other. Are Marans chicks known to be ill tempered or do I have a batch of angry babies?

It could be they are just establishing a pecking order. Watch them close if one bleeds remove it or the others will kill him. Making sure they have enough room.If they are in an area that is to small or came from a place where they had them in a small area. They will learn to peck on each other which could lead to feather eating.

The Carnation comes from the use of Penne blood. Don

Oh, ok, I know what those are. I was wondering if Penne was a line of BCM I hadn't heard of.
Thanks for the help, guys. I couldn't get him to hold still long enough for a good pic, but what Marcy was seeing in the pics was definitely something. At the base of his rearmost blade there are three more points, all in line with the comb, but near the base and pointing towards the rear. They're not clumped like the penedesenca in the link you posted, but they are definitely extra points. That sounds like what Don was describing as carnation. Is that what carnation is, or would those be considered sprigs? Thanks again for your honest opinions. I have learned so much on this thread
