Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have a breeding question about BCM over Golden Cuckoo. I know the eggs can be lightened by it, but I was told this GCM came from a very dark egg. If she lays dark eggs I thought I might try it, but not at the expense of someone finding bad genes down the line from a bird they may purchase from me.

Is this just a big no no or do some folk do it and disclose it?
Do you avoid buying BCM pullets from a BCMxGCM breeding/breeder?
Will it bring up BCM issues down the line if someone is taking the BCM pullets into their breeding program?

I don't have my heart set on it I just have a pretty GCM and thought it might be a good way to get sexlinked BCM pullets for the next season.

I guess at the end of the day I'm wondering what genes can linger and if they will cause problems.

Thanks.

IF he ends up with good type is the shafting possible to breed out?
I'm thinking it is but most Old English Bantam Gamefowl Show Breeders avoid it .... to be more correct about this go to one of the OEGB breeders groups and talk to some of the show people . Reason i mention Old English is they have more history than just about any of the breeds i know of and shafting is dreaded amongst them also .

One could google "shafting in show fowl" also .

I have four 3-week old black copper marans chicks that I hatched under a broody. The woman I got them from said they are from the Little Peddler Line. Three out of the four have a black comb. What does this mean exactly to those of you with BCM experience? Do you they will grow out of them? Are they some other mix? Has anyone else had black-combed chicks? This is Pharaoh.

It changes as they grow. Black that old though is likely a pullet as the boys get red pretty early. I have had 5 week old BCMs trying to crow before!

OOOOOH I hope you're right. That was the next thing I was going to ask. 2 of my other BCMs look just like her so there's no point in posting pics but we have a 3rd that looks different but not necessarily more Roo-ish. JoJo is much lighter in color, like a grey that almost seems to have a lacey pattern to it. 'She' also has some copper on her wing tips while the others have none. Her comb is strange- lighter in color but almost none existent height wise- like she has no bumps at all on it. She also has an extra toe on each feathered foot and is bulky...like almost chubby. Any insight on this one?

Blue? Or splash? I've never had either so I haven't a clue.

picture of the foot with the extra toe would be nice. This is most likely a blue copper.

Here is a video of her feet taken today:
Here is a pic of the extra toe from when she was a few days old. Not the best angle. Any guess on pullet or roo?
