Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Why planning on culling so early? I'm here to learn and I'm interested how you would determine to cull that one so young

A cull can still be grown to a older age before killing, rehoming or sending to be a layer on your farm. Some things are just easily noticed on the down feathers but will take time to show up as a juvenile.

With the amount of chicks I grow out just can not afford to grow out the Culls. By all means if you would like grow out all you can as a learning experience. I always say they belong to you so do whatever you would like with them. Sometimes it is just cheaper to take some advice from someone that has grown out several thousand BC Marans over the past eight year. Good luck with your Marans.

Why not just sale them as pet quality for a cheaper price then your best quality. That way they don't cost you much and people who want some but could never afford the best bred get a chance to own one of these amazing birds? :)

Quote: Well..... some people do sell them as layers. Some people process them for the freezer. They don't cost that much really. I have seen Cuckoo Marans at Tractor Supply for $2.99. There are plenty of people around that will sell you "pet" quality BCM. Even with only the 50 - 100 birds I keep I do try to cull the obvious as quickly as I can due to time, money and labor involved. It also makes room for me to continue on my program. Snowbird is a "big" breeder. He is knowledgeable, experienced and has an agenda. It just depends on what your plans are.

Here in Michigan at most you might get $10 for a four month Layer flock Marans pullet , Just can not take up the space from the better Marans to grow out Culls.

We are trying to improve our BC Marans and just do not sell breeder Quality Pullets to anyone, if they are not good enough for me they are not good enough to sell to someone else. If I can ever raise enough excellent Quality Marans then I just might consider selling some to hand picked people that would not mix them with a handful of bloodlines.

I think Hitler said something similar. It's everyone's personal choice but for me there is a morality aspect to killing a baby based off of something like apearance. Especially when there are homes for them to go to. Places where they will be layers or pets. I mean we are talking about living creatures. I'm all for bettering the breed. I think that's important to sustain the beauty of the breed. But I just think some people get so caught up in that they forget these are living animals with feelings and emotions.
