Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Yeah I also wondered if that was fluid or just an illusion once the comb size reaches that type of grand size.
Anyways it kind of reminds me how humans with Fragile X syndrome have enlarged testicles (macroorchidism). I did a search and found a research article "The fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) is an mRNA binding protein that regulates activity-dependent protein synthesis and morphological dynamics of dendrites. Loss and abnormal expression of FMRP occur in fragile X syndrome (FXS) .....Protein BLAST analyses first demonstrate that the FMRP amino acid sequences in the alligator and chicken are highly similar to human FMRP with identical mRNA-binding and phosphorylation sites, suggesting that FMRP functions similarly across vertebrates."

WHO KNOWS!! NATURE IS SO COOL!!

Exactly. You're right, and the similarities are very cool. I think he is super interesting.

I suppose unless a vet that works on chickens see and does some test we will never know for sure.

Anybody with FBCM near Idaho? Anyone send hatching eggs? The place I get my birds only has cuckoo marans and I really want a FBCM so I can breed olive eggers!
Chicken lady getting crazier by the second!

Why not use the Cuckoo Marans hens an Ameraucana/EasterEgger cockerel to make your olive eggers. You would get black sex-linked olive eggers. Not only would you get pullets destined to lay olive eggs, but you would know which of the chicks were destined to lay eggs and which destined to crow as soon as they they fluffed out in the hatcher.

Could somebody please tell me when copper maran boys get their copper necks and coloured feathers? I've just given away a cockerel because my council doesn't let us have them and the "chook guy" queried his colour. He just has a bit of a ring on his neck. He's only 10 weeks old. Is this normal development? Do they get their colouring later on? (I think he was wondering whether he really is pure bred, which I understood him to be from the fellow I got the eggs from).

I didn't see a picture of your guy, but here's one of mine at 9 weeks.
