Black Copper Marans discussion thread

They seem to be one of the more determined brooding breeds that I have, after one goes broody I can't seem to break them from it haha.
Oh no, I hope mine doesn't go clucky. I've just had my white sussex cross "snap out of it" after a long time of sitting in there. Another couple of my little girls are spending too much time in there as well.

Looking forward to my first Blue Copper Marans this July. It was a last minute addition to my order. Really wanted the Black Copper variety, but they were all gone for the week of my initial order so I had to choose another variety. Looking to spice up my egg colors with some darker shades of brown. My girls sell the eggs and while some customers only care about the "farm fresh" aspect, others like a wide variety of colors and shades. They sound like a good choice for our small flock with what is reported to be a nice temperament. Hope she won't go too broody on me. We had two Buff Orpingtons that kept me busy all summer trying to break their strong nesting desires. Gonna up my flock to maybe 18 birds this summer, and broody hens keep the sales down, at least when you are not interested in raising chicks from eggs during laying season.

They sure do lay pretty eggs and maybe you will be lucky...i have a 3 yr old BCM and she has never gone broody! i am very glad about it mostly because her personality would not allow me to get close to her or her chicks most likely and she might kill anyone who tried, feathered or otherwise!

Congrats for your new additions! My Marans (22 months old) Blue & Black copper have not been broody but they are sporadic layers, they take breaks every 2-3 months after laying clutches. We really love their dark shelled eggs & their temperament though. We just got 3 more chicks a week ago, to supplement the dark brown eggs, we also purchased 3 Welsumer to try so we'll have constant supply of egg varieties. Ah, buff Orpingtons we just got one also for freebie, I've read about their broodiness, I tried to kind of avoid them before even though they're one of the highly recommended by my friends for being gentle and docile.

Thanks for the description of their temperament and laying habits. Sounds like the BCM should fit right it. My youngest daughter is the main reason we went with the BO's. Great personality, and they have been really good layers when not trying to nest. Two of the four have been broody for a couple of weeks at a time. But they do lay well in the winter. If the BCM will do the same I will be happy.

Hi Everyone, I am going to order chicks or eggs from Brian Parks. Has anyone ordered chicks from him. He has three lines and I am not sure on which ones to order. Any input would be awsome to help me decide! He has his own line,Bevs line and little peddler. I have started over 4 times now and would like some help! Thank you!

why not some of each???? that is what i would do!

I am only going to order about a dozen chicks. I think I may get 6 of his line and 6 of Bevs. 4 chicks from each line doesn't sound like very many!

What to do! What to do!
