It may just be me here, but I'm not seeing pure bred Marans here. The body and tail shape is not what it should be. How old are these birds? Where are you located? The hackle color is very light, straw colored, which is not desireable. The tail looks to be "fan" shaped and long for a pullet. How big are they? They also look to be on the small size to me. Just my opinion here, hopefully, someone else will chime in.

Question, can you tell wether a chick is a pullet or roo when they are born? I thought I read that one or the other will have a white dot on their head.

Thank You,

Lanae

Yes, but only if it is the cuckoo variety of Marans. Males will have a big white spot on the back of the head. Cuckoo's and Wheaten Marans are the only ones that I know of that are sexable by feather color or markings, cuckoo's being at hatch and Wheatens being about a week to 10 days old.
Hope this helps and I know someone will come along with more info. for you.

Well I'm back lol. I went to Newnan yesterday and got TONS of pics. Mostly saw BCMs but there were alot of other Marans as well. Not sure if I should post my pics on this thread or the regular Marans thread.

I agree, those tails are not anything like a Marans tail. I agree they are mixed.

I am by NO MEANS a Marans expert, but these don't look right to me either. I have to agree with Debbi, the two facing the right don't appear to have the right body type & tail nor the correct "copper" coloring in the hackles. The one in the middle (facing the camera) looks a little closer, maybe...?? ~ especially with the bigger comb & wattles. Maybe it's just their age?? Sorry it doesn't look like good news.

Welcome Scorpio!

I am not an expert by any means, so what I say may be completely off base....apologies for that in advance if I am.

Were these birds sold to you as Large Fowl or Bantam? I see some bantam game bird in them which leads me to believe they may be crossed.
The tail is very long and erect for a LF Marans (or Bantam Marans in my opinion) and the one in the front since I can see her the best appears to be very small and type is also not right for Marans. I would agree with the others that they are mixed. I do have to say that the little pullet in the front has a very sweet face and pretty delicate features.
