Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Well, now we have two roos and three hens. (One each blue copper, one boy two girls BCM.) What do you think, more Marans or some EEs? If more Marans, then I'm thinking 2 blue or blue copper and one BCM. EEs would likely be of the feed store varietal. OR choose door #3 and just divide what I have using future girls I hatch out to fill in the blanks? This would be possible as the boys are unrelated to one another. Would my poor blue girl be tired out having a roo all to herself?

If you keep a blue rooster.. I would go with black copper hens.. that is me... I like to keep a dark eggie... The black coppers bring the most to the table there... you will still get your blues and your blacks... I would still carry a black copper male as well.. You may choose to share the extra rooster with a friend or pair it up with a farm store americauna for an olive egger prospect.... At any rate...I like the head shape of the birds you have.. I will enjoy watching them grow up in cyberspace!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

Did anyone else notice the Fantastic head shape on these birds... Particularly Sherman... I likey him much...

Geebs, please share with me the outstanding qualities of the pictured rooster's head? I'm trying to learn and to me, he is a very beautiful roo.

I don't know about tired, but she will be BALD. I have one roo to 12 hens. He services all and several of his favorites need saddles. He is a year old and still going strong. My EE complains LOUDLY if he just looks at her. She is one of his favorites, but the feeling is not reciprocated. LOL

I have started separating him from the flock and putting the none favorites with him to give the girls a break from him for 1/2 the day or so.

BOTTOM LINE - - - you are going to need a lot more than 2 hens with one BCM roo if you are going to leave them together full time.

Good morning everbuddies!!!!

I am on the hunt for a new camera... Mine bit it... They last me about one year if I am lucky... It is all the horse arena's and dust etc... They take a beating.... DRAT!!!! I need to post a progress on the hatchie I have....

Black coppers are water logged here in Oregon... Can't wait till spring... I want to separate out a couple more hens for Charles and I will put my overmelanised birchen hen in with him.... and get some hatchies... I will probably have enough to share some this year... Now that I know what he is producing with the hens I can offer something to others. It has to quit raining here some first... too hard to keep eggies clean... If someone is wanting to hatch a few eggies for good roosters I would love to share the genes for that...(the hens are good too)... I am just a rooster hound...

I want to hatch some eggs from my BHB flock.. (closed flock) and set some BHB's aside for future generations... Lots of cool genes in that pool.

Working on the bantam bc project ........I will keep you posted as I get my hatchies from that... No eggs available for a couple years I expect... Just not much to work with... I took too many losses in that department..... I am not happy with what is being called bantam... it just isn't small enough... If there are any collaberators out there that want to trade genes let me know... I will gladly trade for different genetics...

Geebs, I'd swap you some eggs if you'd like. You've seen my flock of hens (in photos) but I can send them privately if you wish! You've seen my rooster.

I just acquired three young blue Marans roos', well one she said is a Splash but I need to take pics. Its stopped raining here for the moment so maybe I can go grab some.

BTW, not sure what you are looking for camera wise but I love the Canon EOS, easy to understand (not quite as complicated symbol wise for me as the Nikon) and very easy to use, switch settings etc.,

REALLY NICE JOB with the photography! They are so cute that you just want to squeeze them.

Thanks Lisa, I took enough of them that I cut them down to just those. The others were not so good especially in all this rain and snow we are having.
I am going to keep some records just like you are. Great job there and thanks for the idea.

WHOOOOOOOPPPPSSS choked on a bone (figure of speech)... Sorry guys, as usual, "finger faux pas". Let me clarify...I will gladly trade eggies and birds with BANTAM projecters... If you have ooober smallies.. lmk...

Sorry guys... My bad... I have my BC flocks exactly how I want them... Gosh you guys are the bestest though!!! thanks for all the offers!!!!... I am sorry I wasn't specific...
