Another question you guys/gals.................................I covered a mossy BCM hen with a Big beautiful Duck wing colored EE that came from a beautiful big blue egg. I hatched the chick but don't have a clue which chick it is...........As I have said I am gathering suggestions on how to separate chicks in the same hatch to identify them after they hatch...went to bed at midnight with no chicks & woke up at 5 a.m. to 7 chicks & didn't know who was who..................Anyhow those chicks were pure EEs & pure BCM except, later, when I was finally brave enough to open the incubator & remove shells I discovered one was clearly marked OE. Today (a week & 1/2 later) I am noticing one of the BCM chicks is getting brown on her black hard feathers on her wing. Could that be her??? I gave the EEs away but they all looked alike with the bar & side stripes down their back like EEs have. Any of you have experience with this cross? Do I need topost on the Ameraucana thread or where?????

I guess it depends on your roo!
in my other pen, one roo to 5 hens, I often get a few with bare backs... he's rougher...
but my BCM is a gentle guy, with no excessive need to mate over nad over.

Karen, what type of bator are you using? I simply use a piece of cardboard in my tabletop bator - I cut it to within a 1/2" from the top so airflow is still good. My tabletop bator is small (Brinsea Octo 20 advance), but I've partitioned it off in up to 4 quadrants without issue.

Math Ace, thanks for the kudos! He's not quite deep copper enough on the hackles but he's my first so now I know what to look for next time I start assessing potential roos! I have two 5 month old blues and the lady thinks one splash, roos that I picked up the other day. They are HUGE! Anyway, will hope to get pics today? maybe...cold and windy out not yet raining.

I think your hubby will say you've gone over the edge

This little one is refusing to stay IN the brooder and has decided it needs to view it's small empire (my office) It flies up and perches on the brooder edge and looks down upon it's siblings. Stinker.
