does that mean that is is ok to mate brother and sister I thought that was bad ???

So you know for a sure thing that they are brother and sister? or that they are by the same rooster and then are 1/2 brother and sister? In-breeding chickens is not quite the same as other species so not always a bad thing to tightly breed them as long as you cull and use for instance spiral breeding. Breeding like Pink is using a totally ? rooster from a super dark egg and then tight breed the offspring is supposed to make for the darkest eggs and can be done for many crossings before you need to out cross and in her case she can use a cousin which should keep her egg color good. You are going to need to use "outside" blood sometime for right now if the 2 you have are very nice try crossing them together and see what happens you can still look for birds to add and really every mating at first is a "test" work with what you have and add what you want as you go it just takes time.

My darlin son likes to mix things. One of his favorite things to mix is baking soda and vinegar. Both of these items when separate are inert and do no harm. However, when you mix them, you can get a nasty explosive mess.

This is what happens when you mix lines. . .

Davis line by itself has certain traits that are predictable. The Jeane line by itself has cetain traits that are predictable. HOWEVER, when you mix them - -- - genetic stuff happens that creates a genetic EXPLOSION. There is no telling what kind of mess you will be creating that you will spend a few generations cleaning up.

A lot of the mess can be cleaned up . . . . but it does take time and lots and lots of culling.

I have made the paper mache volcano myself.......................

Thank you for clearing that up so the chicks I just hatched that had brown faces they probably have some other undesirable strain in them so I just won't use them for my good breeding but I can use the ones that have good coloring .

Kathy is an AMAZING WOMAN and I think she has almost every kind of chicken someone could imagine!!!!!!

Brown face doesn't mean bad line unless you know that from growing them out I get that in some of mine the pullet that was like that has the best necklace of the others hatched with her and lays a 6 egg I wouldn't consider that bad

and I have a Blue Birchen with that brown waiting to see what happens......Marans are a work in progress keep good notes take pictures and have a great journey

My Marans are the D'Amico strain! They are just beautiful birds and have great personalities to boot!
