Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Some lines of Marans seem to feather in slower than others. Sometimes females will feather in faster too especially in the wings and tail areas.
I would keep an eye on your chick and make sure she is eating, drinking, and pooping okay. If she isn't acting ill and doing okay otherwise, she may just be smaller. I have a few that are really small. Both females. One blue Marans hen I have is really little for her age she is spunky and healthy, just small. The roos really like her for some reason lol.

From my late Jan hatch I had some OK boys and a couple of clunkers. They are still young so they may change but so far nothing I would consider keeping given the limited space (and the fact I have to drive them 3 hours away to my families property where my breeding flocks are). I'd love to get 1 spectacular roo and it would make all of the culling worthwhile. I have a couple little prospects out right now and hoping for a few more in the next couple of weeks.

Hi,

She is eating - she eats a lot. She is quite vigorous. She is four weeks old tomorrow. I can't post pictures yet because I need to make one more post. I think I can post a picture in my next post.

I just felt her crop - it's got stuff in it.

We are giving her worms now to supplement her diet and I'm going to give her Poly-vi-Sol without Iron after I run to the store tonight.

I will try to post a picture next.

Here is a picture of her at three weeks - Blueberry:

That was last week - with the frog. Here's our barred rock, Blackberry, with the same frog, last week as well.

They are the same age with two days difference between them.

She may have the slow feathering gene? Watch to see how she develops. If she stays consistently behind within the next few weeks, I would not put her in a breeding pen...just me. At 4+ weeks, she should be almost, if not, fully feathered.

That is the only rooster in the brooder, I tell ya! I kinda feel guilty now--I was going to sell off some of these EE's as straight run. Now that Mr. Too Big For Feathers has started crowing, does that mean I'm stuck with him?!? It would be kinda wrong to leave him in the running for possible selection, right? Even if I let them pick?

Now I got to live with the noise maker for the next 3 months...

 

[Hens and Roos]

Here are some updated pictures of the 3 chicks we hatched from Pink. They are just about 3 weeks old. There are 2 Blue Copper and 1 BCM. We guessed on what we thought they were. Pictures aren't the greatest- they don't like to stay still!

Hi - Thanks so much for your replies! We won't be breeding at all. We are definitely in this only for eggs. But I have to admit these six little chicks are so darn cute that I can see why people would want more! Our town limits us to six chickens (no roosters) so we are at capacity.

Thanks again. We'll up her protein and see if she feathers out soon. I hope she's a she because she is so darn sweet! Little Blueberry is definitely one of my favorites. I would be sad if she were Little Boy Blue...
