Black Copper Marans discussion thread

WOO HOO!! I sent a message to the Marans egg seller asking if he had other types of Marans besides the BCM, and he does, and he's willing to send me an assortment!! So I'll be getting some of each of: Blue Coppers, Black Coppers, and Wheatens! Yee haw!! Good thing that I'll move more eggs to the hatcher before they get here. *happy dance*

OK so I will jump into the rooster "ass"esment ring. Here are some pictures of my "potential keeper" rooster about 5-months old... who by the way hates me and will not let me near him to take a picture. So sorry the pictures are not good conformation shots

yes he has a bit too much color on his front but I am working with fairly dark hens.

I think maybe his fluff is not dark enough; I think Don calls it brown? What problems does that lead to down the road?

that's his sister behind him.
by the way.... Pink.... these are two of my GFF x chicks.

thanks,
Keara

Me too! I was looking for dark eggs and Keara offered me a few of her birds, she's only about 45 minutes from me.

While I will not be actively breeding to SOP, since I'm breeding mine for dual purpose, I will be paying attention threads like this one and looking out for any major defects in my birds. I also have no plans on selling hatching eggs or birds, although I will share birds with my back yard flock friends who want dark eggs, much like Keara did for me. Otherwise anyone who need to be culled, as well as most roos, will end up on our dinner table.

Yum Marans roo! I had one on the dinner table last night. Kinda makes me look forward to seeing faults in my roos.... so I can have a good reason to eat them!!!

You keep telling me that, and I want to try one! I'm definitely not giving up on Dr. Ruckus this year though, he's too much of a teddy bear with his ladies!

I do have one of the mossy hens you gave me who's been terrorizing some of my other hens though, so if I get any roos to harvest this fall she may go with them, not sure. She's already torn the comb on my White Rock hen, now if any of the other hens are in the nesting box when she enters the coop they get up and run away from her.

she sounds like a good one for the pot, unless she is laying a good egg?

That's the only reason I'm hesitating, I think she does. I'm to have to do some detective work this weekend and stalk those five hens on the box. 2 lay a good egg, the rest are ok (but nice for my egg basket), I'm worried she might be one of the good ones, I have the other identified and she's friendly enough with the others.

Keara, I really like your boy. His back angle is good, tail angle good, shank feathering to me looks to be perfect. I don't see "brown" fluff - it's hard to tell in the pics, but it appears to be charcoal/black to me. Don's the expert there, though!

Shank color & eye color are correct; but to me, he looks overmelanised, not under. JMO!

ETA, he's not as broad as I personally prefer - either in his chest or across his back. But, that's just a personal preference. To me, you've got a nice one there!

Thanks for the comments as I am relatively new to show poultry and just trying to figure out all the inside info. from the oldtimers. Apparently you are not aware of how hard it is to get good Marans that will work in the SOP.

I don't get this Don.... I thought you did lots of showing??? Did I miss something here?????

Keara: Nice looking boy!!!

If any of you guys that decide to send in eggs want an idea for shipping... I came up with something REDICULOUS... but good. email me... I am not answering PM's. It takes too long. Good luck with the contests.... Lots of room for eggies and participation and a sense of belonging without a huge commitment. Good luck eggybuddies!!!!
