Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Ok forgive me.. I am too pooped to get up and go in the other room to get my book that has the feather anatomy pics and can't seem to find the pic I want on google. What part of the wing is the bow?
The SOP for black copper says
"Wings—Shoulders : Black.
Fronts : Black.
Bows : Deep russet red.
Coverts : Lustrous black.
Primaries : Black.
Secondaries : Black, exposed portion forming black wing bay."

So what part of the wing is supposed to have deep russet red?

Does this help.... Sorry I borrowed your pic to mark the items in questions, you may have to go back and look at the original to see the triangle that is there.
.

This is my guy see how his wing bow is darker... I think that is what you are looking for.... not that he is perfect.

This rooster has a lot of things wrong. Yellow feet, Copper is too dark, the French standard says "mahogany " color is not desired & should not be used. The copper should be a medium copper.
Tail set is too low. He is just wrong.
No yellow on those hackles! He is beautiful, thank you for posting this pic.
I have been studying the SOP. Is this too much mahogany? I am still learning. Can anyone tell me if this is correct coloring?

Quote: lol thank you! Now that it is morning in Hawaii I have the strength to get my SOP book off the shelf and look at the pics.

My broody hen doesn't seem to be up to snuff in the brooding department. I bought Maran eggs just for her to hatch. I threw a few Lav Am eggs in there as well when my son broke a few of the BC Maran eggs right after purchasing them. She keeps pushing the Maran eggs out!!!

They are all due this weekend and it is cold and wet here so her pushing them out makes me FREAK. I have braced myself mentally that I might not get any eggs at all to hatch this time around... or she won't. In that vein of thought I am hoping someone lives near Maine/NH who would be coming to the Chickenstock event in July and could bring BC Marans or who lives in these states and would sell me either eggs or at least one layer (two would be nice). I am not out to breed these pretty gals, I just would like to have them in my collection and show off their beautiful eggs. Sounds nutty, I know. I have rainbow dozens here and these are the only color I don't have. Won't anyone share??

Here is the photo album of the three non Black Copper Marans roosters we are using at the moment. Not that they are the greatest but please feel free to comment, I am always the student.

Hey Lady. Got any more pics of the blue birchen boy? Like a nice side shot, close up of the comb, from the front? If you do, feel free to post them over on the regular marans thread, I'd love to see them

So, I have a few BCM chicks with middle toe feathers. They are a week old. Would culling these now be a good idea? The majority seem to be correct to the standard wth only the outer toe. Also there is at least one that has a shorter outer toe than normal; Should I cull for this to? What and when should I be looking out for? I had day old's last year for the first time and ended up with 1 decent rooster (his back was too short) and 3 hens from 15. Though they all seemed too dark compared to what seems to be the norm, so I'm starting with 25 (hopefully 28 in 3 days) this time and shooting for about the same...to cull or not to cull, that is the question.
