like I said, ignore me. There are so many different names for the same things and it can mean different things depending on the country and I'm just not thinking really clearly tonight. I'll have to have a do over in the morning, or maybe Don will come by with all the correct terminology while I'm sleeping.

Donna , your phot brings up another question. I see lack of full coverage in some birds; what I mean is not every feather is red, rather a few black feathers with green sheen are mixed in. I suspect that those should not be there. Nice coloring DOnna.

I can't fight every battle, he is the best I have so he gets to stay till he dies or I get better.

My roo is not up for a critique.... I only put the pics up to get a color question answered. I will go back an edit my original post to that effect too.

IS this what you are asking???? From the Marans.org site

Wings—Shoulders : Black.
Fronts : Black.
Bows : Deep russet red.
Coverts : Lustrous black.
Primaries : Black.
Secondaries : Black, exposed portion forming black wing bay.

OK i have a black cuckoo maran and she has something weird with her feaders i wanna know what it could be

Just had a thought Arielle, you should see if Debbi would be willing to post a pic of her two boys, they are in the mahogany range and would give you a good visual example. I'm not finding anything in my marans photo folder yet.

Here is an older pic of Roy, left, and Clyde. Both are brothers, both mahogany. Roy's hackles look lighter in the pic due to the bringht sunlight, so look more at the saddle feathers for a more correct color. Mahogany males will also have a BLACK ear tuft feathering, as opposed to copper or a color that matches the hackle color.
