Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Just got my new Black Copper Marans chicks yesterday. I am new to the breed but I have never seen this much color in 2 week old chicks. Is this normal? I appreciate any information and apologize for the picture being upside down but I hope you can see what you need to see. I have 2 other chicks from a different source that look like what I would expect a 2 week old bcm chick to look like.
Thanks

I thought so. I know he is on this site. The chicks on his site look as bcm chicks should. His adult birds looked good as well. I emailed him back about the coloring but no answer yet which also makes me skeptical. Don't want to put the breeders name out here on the open forum at this time.

Don't blame you. Anything could happen. Heck, I gave some BCM chicks to a friend. After a few weeks, she kept asking what the brown one was.
I didn't give you any brown ones....
I went to go look a few weeks later. I seems that Dragon, my SHAMO, somehow got into the mix...
Now I have a Shamarans. Looked exactly like a BCM should look. oy.

I am sure they looked like this when shipped as they were in the mail for less than 24 hours. I am disappointed because I wanted more chicks to have breeding stock to start with.

We have ALL been thru this. Almost everyone here on these Marans threads, and all the other "hot" breeds, has learned from experiences just like this.
You never know... they may be really nice as they grow up.
I have seen pictures advertised on the internet posted that were stolen from another site, they borrow them, and make people believe that those birds are the sellers breeding stock.
Everyone likes to say they have (insert anyones name here) stock.
I bought hatching eggs from a very well known hatchery. They claim to have "Bev Davis and Wade Jean" lines.
Anybody can take a great bird, and breed it to crap, and sure, the parents do have Bev and Wade in them, but in one generation, they are junk.
Anyway, my eggs hatched, and all the Marans had different color legs.
Since they "were Bevs" birds, I went straight to the source. I e-mailed Bev Davis, and told her what I had, and asked if she knew what was going on.

She told me I should ask for my money back.
Lesson learned.
Oh, BTW

there is a ton of info here. You really need to take a few weeks, and read all the Marans threads.
All the questions everyone has had are all answered here.

That is Mossy-ness..... I would not worry about it YET. If it does not molt out, then you can worry about it. Rumor has it that the mossy females lay the darkest eggs. If they are roos, they will probably be over colored. All my original birds had it to some degree, molted out and they lay a nice dark egg.
