Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Only 2 out of my flock are BC marans. 1 is a young hen & the other a young Roo. The roo was born brown & all the others out of the batch were black. Has anyone ever seen this before? These are the 1st Marans ive owned. The guy i got them from was just going to kill the brown 1 because it was different & none of his others have ever been brown when hatched. They were both supposed to be hens too lol.

The brown colored male is just something that happens with the Black Copper sometimes. They should be culled if you are planning on breeding to the SOP , if you are just breeding chickens it would not matter.

I know I have contacted a number of BYC marans breeders that have not posted pictures here on the forum; at least not that I have found. Perhaps you can persuade a few to share photos for us to learn what type means.

NYREDS (judge)was just saying on the heritage thread that the SOP is open to subjective interpretation. Based on that, I expect many views. What I like about such a discussion is to understand what areas are more subjective than others, and why a person has that view.

Wynette , if you know someone on BYC who has good BC why not say who it might be for everyone to see. The best evidence is a picture. Not very many good type and body structure Marans have been pictured since I have been on BYC.

This is what I was talking about when I said we have to keep and open mind and be acceptable to taking constructive critiqueing.

Don, How does one set up an initial breeding pen and set up subsequent years. Pen One = Rooster fro Source A with hens from SOurce B. ANd select these birds based on the ability to compliment each other colorwise, good type on both. THen what? ANd how do I include breeding for egg color as that is important to this breed?

I'm still stumbling . . but I'm learning.

Arielle, I do not believe any of the SOP should be subjective in individual interpretation. If we dig into the first 40 pages everything will be real clear what is expected.

Arielle, will put something together for you, with all this you could write a book explaining it all. I might not be the right person to ask as I do not like short cuts. See what the experts have to say and I might be able to add something.

Thanks for the reply. Not breeding, just for eggs & pet quality - no show. All were supposed to be hens but now i have a roo as well . He is nice but im sure i will need to rehome or ?? at some point.

Interesting, very interesting..... that must be how birds with OBVIOUS DQ's are winning at some sanctioned shows. I know this has come up on the GNH thread about COLOR..... there are no color swatches in the SOP, so it is up to the judge to determine the color and if it is correct. From what I have read the younger judges have NEVER seen the older NH and don't have a reference to draw color from. Everyone was complaining about the artist rendition of the GNH. Makes me think they may all be a little off since the artist is not necessarily a chicken person. I come from a printing background so Copper to me looks NOTHING like what these Marans have (copper in my world does not have much red, just enough to change it from GOLD to Copper). So everyone can take a piece of the pie and make it fit their own views and pallet. Now if someone can give me some PMS colors I can look them up and KNOW what color they are talking about LOL......

Donna, the dark color we see on most BC Marans is more Mahogany then it is copper. Everyone at the time knew the color was going to be a problem when they went into the SOP as Black Copper. It would of been much easier if they had of went in as Brown Reds. With everything involved I do not know if it is possible to breed a line of BC where they breed consistant.
