Black Copper Marans discussion thread

In the past several in this region had thought about having a siminar at some of the regional shows. This would be perfect if it was advertised and the host show furnished a few cages to display some Marans for the group to see.
That is an excellent idea Don. We had one here at the Heritage Expo a couple weeks ago. Bev Davis was here, so I did a brief thing about Marans after and during the time I judged the show. It was interesting to see what was important to each person. Most of what they thought important wasn't that big of a deal overall. I did it as I judged the Marans. You usually can't do this, but this was a show where this was encouraged.
All you need is one good bird to show the comparisons and i had the good luck of having a very good BC hen in the show.

Thanks for the kind words Don and Math Ace.

I must say this to touch briefly on the current subject matter....THANK YOU to EVERYONE who participates in and on these online discussion groups and forums. Without.... I personally would know nothing and not be able to share what I have learned with others. Sharing what I have gleaned is something that I love to give back and makes me smile if it helps even only one person.

I kid you not when I say that I learned everything I know about chickens from BYC and like forums and the amazing community of members who share their experiences, wisdom, advice and critiques.

Barb, and Wynette I suppose you would rather the thread go back to a coffee club that it was in the past.

I get nothing from doing this except the feeling that I tried to help someone with my experiences from the past.
Geeze, Don, that's rather insulting - I think you know that's not what I would like to see in this thread or the main Marans thread - hence the reason I started the SOP thread. The "coffee club" atmosphere is actually why I don't post much around here any longer.

Anyway, as far as pictures as opposed to seeing a bird in person - I stand by my comment that everyone who is breeding to the SOP needs to have one to refer to. I cannot think that ANY judge would say differently, and they are the ones we are breeding for, if we are showing. If you're not breeding for show, of course there's no reason to own one.

It's not that I don't appreciate pictures - I certainly do, and there ARE things you CAN see in them, just not enough to make a complete decision on a bird and a picture would never replace seeing a specimen in person. Things such as feather color, eye color, amount of shank feathering, tail being open enough, etc., you can see in a picture. But many other things are much more subtle - you can't see, for example, a tiny side sprig (unless you have a camera with macro abilities), angle of back, even degree of tail angle are not good to judge via picture. Even color is sometimes difficult to see in a picture if it's very cloudy or excessively sunny. Also, size, which is lacking in our breed, is difficult to judge via picture. But since we don't all live in the same town, we must rely on pictures, and I think those of us who offer feedback (I really hate the work "critique" - just me, though) are usually really good about mentioning things that should be looked for when we see telltale signs of it in a picture. THAT is, in my opinion, the importance of a photo and for sure, it can go a long way in folks understanding what to look for in their breeders.

I do not find it helpful to degrade anyone's stock - I have said, and will continue to say - there is ALWAYS a way to make your point without being abrasive or unkind. If someone asks for feedback, by all means, give it to them! Just please, PLEASE do it in a helpful way.

OH - and last but certainly not least - Don, I have been thinking along the same lines as you, about arranging a local judging demonstration. Why don't we work together to make this happen, and perhaps we can get the APA's permission to tape it & post it here! That would ROCK!

Peter Ovalle out here in the west is a very active Marans member. The PPBA show in
Stockton will probably have a good entry of Marans. If Peter is willing and the timing is right, I could do a seminar and he could film it. It would have to be after the judging, so that could be a time problem. This seminar could be done anywhere and if you have good Marans breeders available at the show they could all have input in the video. I agree that you can only go so far with 2D photo's. It is very hard to get good pics of chickens and only a very few folks are accomplished at this.

Pantone Matching System. PMS. It is an international way to know what color a person is talking about without seeing it.

It is similar to trying to match food colors with offset printing...it is never going to be accurate. Then if you leave a color plate exposed to light for any length of time, you have another color change........even if you have used UV ink. The PMS color for Marans copper would be in the metallic swatches of the PMS book. In the good BCM's I have seen it is closer to a metallic than a regular color. I was in the printing industry for many years.
