Black Copper Marans

I don't know if this applies to this "white" chick, but I was reading in "An Introduction To Color Forms of the Domestic Fowl" by Brian Reeder, that he states in the section about Wheaten - eWh, that these chicks are born with either yellow or white down. It seems most people are accustomed to yellow chicks, so maybe that is why this little guy sticks out like a sore thumb in the Wheaten world of Marans.
It's just a thought, I could be totally off base, but it really caught my attention when I saw it and I had been reading about this little chick.

Gold based Wheaten( like Wheaten Marans,Wheaten OEG) are born yellow; Silver based Wheatens (like Light Sussex,Ermine Faverolles) are are born white.

Could that mean that this chick is Silver based, oops never mind I just re-read your post and saw that the Marans are golden based. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Well this is hilarious...I just hatched two Wheaties from BCM eggs and came across my own post while searching about Wheaties.

I've been just about sick and tired of Black Coppers and all their drama and unsat phenotypes for a while, so as predicted, I am totally tickled pink with these Wheaties. Now I wanna go get more of these eggs (they're local).

Who wants the culls, er, the BCMs?

Enjoy your chicks!

If you get serious about breeding, remember that you will most likely need to breed mahogany and melanizers out of your BCM-wheatens. Have fun with the project!

Do Marans take longer to lay? Because my Wheaton still has not laid and I bought her as a pullet in June. She's big & beautiful, but NO EGGS!

Thanks. You're so awesome.

What would I look for in the phenotype? Too much black? All black? Black highlights all over, like a splash-ish sort of thing?

I have some BC's from an early May hatch who are just starting to lay. but we're much colder here STILL and I expect that has something to do with their desire to lay.

I hope to have chicks coming from Chicken Scratch Poultry in April does anyone else have BCMs from there!! Am so excited is it April yet ??
