I encourage electric fences. They aren't only effective, they are VERY SATISFYING (in a vengeful sort of way) when those dogs hit that wire - you will hear some serious yelping and they will high-tail it for home! (Also works with your OWN dogs, should you have any that aren't 100% trustworthy, and yet you don't necessarily want to shoot them....) You could solve the "immediate" problem by killing a dog who is doing what dogs do, or you could solve the problem permanently - for purposes of all future wayward dogs - by installing an electric fence to protect your flock. Also works for foxes, coyotes.... bears!? (I can't testify to that, but so I hear...)

I can say I have never had a problem with fox, coyote, raccoon, etc. infiltrating the pen(knock on wood). The perimeter is made of railroad ties. Not the faux ones you get @ Lowe's, but actual railroad ties thats freight trains run on. Of course at night they are secured in a coop within the pen. This dog attacking happens when I open the pen for a few hours each week and let them free range right on my front lawn while I am there. They eat grass, bugs, and make a wicked mess dusting in the mulch in my perennial beds(drives my husband nuts), but I don't mind @ all. I am usually sitting in an Adirondack chair watching my children kick a soccer ball around after school. This is my private property where I should be able to have chickens dancing around in tutus with lamp shades on their heads if I want to. Dogs are not supposed to be there! If wild predators where a problem then I would consider the added expense of an electric fence, and if ignorant people would just obey the leash law, it would be a non issue. Ugh!

And I have a yellow Lab mix and chickens too, never an issue. They CAN be trained. Sounds like this dog has more of an OWNER problem than a BREED problem.

Still, you can't shoot the owner (legally) so you have to shoot the dog. I let a roaming pit bull walk SEVERAL times because he traveled across my property almost daily and never was interested in the birds, then one day a puppy ran with him and "educated" him about killing chickens. He's killed 5. 2 of them without the puppy present. I'll never let another loose dog walk again! Keep it off my property or I'll be forced to relocate it myself. Permanently.

minihorse...dogs kill for fun not food. They play with the cute flapping thing until it stops flapping then they grab a new flapping toy. Do not try to apprehend them in a frenzy like that, you could get bitten easily. Keep the gun loaded, by the door and shoot them on once they cross your property boundaries.

It is sad because truly it is not so much the dogs' fault as it is the stupid owner. You are obligated to keep your animals on your property, when they go elsewhere....it is your fault. Sad as it is...just shoot them. Not much a life for a energetic dog like a lab to be chained up all the time either.

You can give the dog a bit of a "shock". Take one of the poor little chickens and put it on a rubber mat, wired with electric wire. Dog picks it up and gets a nasty shock for his trouble. We had neighbor's dogs come up and kill one of my chickens, me being a Yankee who can't shoot the side of a barn, chased that darn dog all the way to his house, shooting right up until he got to his front porch, at which time I had a rather pointed discussion with the owner of the dog. I walked home and no sooner rigged up the corpse according to instructions from my bf that the dog was back. I have to say it was sweet justice to watch that dog slink up thinking he was going to collect his "prize" and watch him jump three feet into the air, spin and run home. Haven't seen him since.

Try getting Guinea Hens. When the dogs strike again, the Guineas will make a huge racket (loud enough to wake you up,) and then you can shoot the dogs.

find someone to take the dogs. I dont see why they should be punished that way ( DEATH ) when they can be removed, especially if this guy dosnt care what happens to them anyway. Its not THEIR fault they are doing what they are not trained NOT to do. Find a more proactive and less destructive way to remove them from the situation.

If you don't want to shoot em, shoot near em. That or get yourself a bigger, meaner, dog than the ones coming into your yard. lol Good luck, thats a tough problem.
