Hey we went out to feed this evening and found one of our Black Maran Hens standing off on her own and not acting like she normally does! When I picked her up I noticed her waddles (spelling?) are swollen and her eye shut. They are free range during the day and put in their barn at night!

Any ideas or suggestions? We’ve brought her in the house and she’s in a kennel.

What does the inside of her beak look like?

Hard to tell, but looks like she has some scabs and abrasions to the beak and wattles. Can you tell if those are bites from a bug or tick. Maybe injury from fighting? Though I've never had wattle swelling like that due to fighting.

It would be good to take a closer look at her eye. Flush it with saline to see if there's pus or debris in the eye. A little Terramycin eye ointment in the eye would be good. You can also use Original Neosporin in the eye if that's all you have.

I highly doubt this is AI. If it is, then the bird should be culled immediately, get her out of the house and contact the state. Quarantine all birds until you get more info.

Here's info on finding your state lab https://www.metzerfarms.com/poultry-labs.html

Now. If you have vet care that is always a good idea.

There's many, many things that can cause swelling of the face and wattles. Fighting, bug/tick/spider bites, Cholera, Several different respiratory diseases, Marek's, Lymphoid Leucosis....I'm sure there's others, but those are just from the top of my head.

Again...What does the inside of her beak look like? Any canker, bad odor, yellow or white pasty or crusty material inside her beak?

Hey thanks for your response!! There is no foul odor, there isn’t any crusty yellow or white stuff on her beak. I’ve not looked in her beak yet, I will do that first thing in the morning when my husband gets home from work (he works 3rd shift).

I called my large animal vet and he doesn’t have any openings until next Monday, except a level 3 walk in (he’s got a large animal hospital as well as doing farm calls) which is a lot more expensive. We just had to have emergency surgery on our 12 week old German Shorthaired Pointer pup, she decided she was a goat and annoyed the crap out of them and got butted which caused a hernia (it’s a good thing my husband files our goat herd’s horns so they are not sharp because the damage would have been worse) that had to have a emergency surgery which cost us $750 last week.

My vet recommended LA200 and he recommended .5cc injected in the breast 1 time per day for 5 days so I went and got it today and gave her the first injection this afternoon. I scheduled an appointment for Monday for her to be soon and all I can do is pray whatever this is is helped by the LA200…. Anything else you would recommend
?
