First is there a difference between black marans and black copper marans? When I bought the chicks the sign just said black marans so I'm not entirely sure they are the same or not. I got 1 black marans that appears to be female and 1 black cuckoo marans that appears to be male. If the 2 mated, what would their chicks be?

There is a difference between a Black and a Black Copper. If you have the French, the Black will look just like the Black Copper, just without the Copper hackles (saddle on rooster).

As far if the two mated, I'm not quite sure on what their chicks will be. I think, but can be very wrong, they might be sex linked, so the males could be the Cuckoo. Again, I can be wrong.

Black Marans are simply a solid black bird, no reds or oranges. Black coppers will be black but females will have a copper color in the hackles and males will have shades of copper and orange in the hackles, shoulders, and saddle. Black cuckoo is just cuckoo (cuckoo without a prefix is assumed to be black so clarification isn't really needed). A cross between a male cuckoo and a black female would produce all cuckoo chicks-no sexlinking. If the parents were reversed, males would be cuckoo and females black. :) That is the cross that makes the popular Mystic Marans sold by hatcheries.

I have a question I have an almost primarily black bird with brown feathers slightly mixed into the coat and they appear to be her big girl feathers so far but she shows no white except for slight white on her breast. What do youall think? Maran if so, what kind?
