black meat???

Silkies ,as you say have dark skin, dark meat & are small.
There are real dark skinned, dark fleshed meat bird breeds in Asia.
The feathers are usually white or red. I can not remember the names of most of the Chinese ones, but 'google' Ac chickens and you should get photos of a white game type meat bird common in Viet Nam,Laos & southern China.

My Korean sister in law wants to eat my Silkies if they turn out to be roosters. She says they are good for your health. I would rather sell them, I think. They are just too cute. I can't help it.

There I said it. There ARE chickens I won't kill for food. Silkies are too cute.

HI THERE! My grandmother also ate the oviduct (she had 10 children to bring up so nothing went to waste)! I tried it but wasn't keen on it. She also taught me to put the chickens' feet (well cleaned of course) into the cooking pot when preparing chicken soup. It strengthens the taste wonderfully and the stock sets to a thicker jelly, which in it's turn will stay fresher longer. I also ate sylkies, both in Hong Kong and in Singapore. You could see them in cages in the markets and even in some of the restaurant kitchens; they kill them to order for your meal, just the way they do the fish.

wow it is amazing what people know here at BYC. I have a few asian frinds whom parents I bring and gift with whole fish whenever I have extras, they also love Blue Fish which I sometimes catch when fishing for bass and dont eat. The first time I brought them a fish it was freshly filleted and I got yelled at for not bringing it whole LOL now I just give them the fish as is. My Grandmother had chickens so my father got to witness and eat all different parts but by the time I was born it was illegal to keep them in my town. I guess I am not suprised about the silkies, although I would like to grow a black bird for meat being that I am so close to NYC I would probably have a lot of buyers but would prefer to use a chicken that is not a silkie since they probably will bring almost as much money selling them as pets and not food...

Anyone know if the other black breeds are available in the states?

I've looked for bigger black skinned chickens too for many years. I've finally resorted to buying other people's mutt experiments and growing my own. There's a really big market for shamo-type chickens with black skin around here. Here's one of my newest hatches: she's a runt (so she'll be my pet)

They are popular in Asian culture as it is believed that they have healing properties. The most common thing that I have heard is the black skin and bones is supposed to help arthritis... kinda like that now illegal supplement made from tiger bones.
