I have a large brooder that has black mold growing does anyone know how to clean it in a way that wont hurt my chicks? They are on smaller brooders right now but I need to put them in the bigger one... any ideas

You can use bleach (90% water and 10% bleach) as a temporary solution, but mold will grow sooner or later. Making sure it air dry before you place your chicks back in. It's best to replace the wood and have some ventilation in your brooder.

Mold can cause aspergiliosus (sp) which will destroy their lungs. I lost over half of my first chicks to it.
Make sure the brooder is clean and all the bedding is new. The bleach is a good idea and ventilation is critical.

thank you for the replies. my brooder has a 2ft wall with mesh top. the mold appeared after I moved my brooder out of our storage building. ventilation shouldn't be a problem with this one.. at least I wouldn't think so. What about using apple cider vinegar they're endless uses for it and its safe right?

It won't do anything to the mold in the wood. The bleach solution would be safe after you let it sun for at least 48 hours. The sun will also help to disinfect it on the surface.
